Doctor Bashir meets with a group of people who, like him, had their DNA altered to make them better. Unfortunately for these people, they suffered serious side-effects of the treatment and developed psychological illnesses that are difficult to reverse. Doctor Bashir attempts to find a solution to the problem.

| Classical Piece: On The Beautiful Blue Danube
The piece of classical music that Doctor Bashir and the group listen to is the 1867 movement On The Beautiful Blue Danube, the original German title is An der Schönen Blauen Donau op. 314, by Johann Strauss the Younger. The river Danube has also been used in the series to designate the class of Runabouts. All Runabouts are Danube-class and are named for major rivers.
