Captain Archer is delighted to welcome his mentor, Emory Erickson, who invented the transporter, along with his daughter, Danica, aboard Enterprise to conduct experiments in sub-quantum teleportation. Erickson seems to be progressing nicely in his work, until the ship enters the blackest and most dangerous area in space known as The Barrens, and a member of Starfleet is brutally killed by an amorphous shape.

Episode Quotes |

(Emory Erickson and his daughter Danica have been beamed aboard Enterprise)
Emory: Nothing seems to be missing. | T'Pol: The Vulcan Science Academy has been studying sub-quantum transporting for some time, with little result.
Emory: I've been trying to get my hands on some of that research for years. In hindsight, it's probably just as well that I couldn't. Might've sent me down the wrong path. | Emory: (to Captain Archer) Truth is, the sub-quantum transporter is a fundamentally flawed concept. It'll never work. Not now, not a thousand years from now. | Emory: I've waited so long for this moment. Planned for it. What if something goes wrong? What if I fail?
Captain Archer: On the day before I entered flight training, I asked my father pretty much the same thing."
Emory: What did he say?
Captain Archer: Don't fail. | T'Pol: The Kir'Shara is having an enormous impact.
Captain Archer: It's clearly had an impact on you. You, uh, seem more certain of yourself.
T'Pol: I've never felt less certain.
Captain Archer: You're re-examining your core beliefs, something most people never do. |
