  Episode Summary
Stardate: 41601.3 Troi, and her shuttle pilot, develop system problems on their shuttle on their return to Enterprise. They then crash on a planet where a malevolent creature lives. The creature, which seems to feed on the suffering of others, is able to prevent their rescue due to its strange powers.

The Enterprise crew’s attempt to rescue Troi leads to the death of a valued crew member. The crew must then find a way around the creature’s powers and rescue Troi, the sole survivor of the shuttle crash, without losing any more of the crews’ lives.

  Episode Notes
Tasha Yar dies a “senseless death” in this episode, but would make a reappearance in the time change episode Yesterday’s Enterprise, and the series finale All Good Things… (1) and All Good Things… (2).

Lt. Commander Leland T. Lynch seemed a little pompous in this episode, and would not be seen again.

  Analysis
It is possible that Joseph Stefano was inspired, at least in part, by the Lost in Space episode entitled "The Space Creature" which featured a similar concept - the base impulses of living beings given form and power. This version is the superior tale.
