Stardate: 41775.5 Capt. Picard is asked by an old Starfleet Captain friend to meet with him in secret. At this meeting with his friend, and with a few other officers, they tell Picard there is a possible problem within Starfleet command. Picard thinks they are overstating things, until he later learns his friend’s Starship has exploded for no apparent reason.
Data is then tasked to look into any disturbing irregularities in recent Starfleet records, and after reviewing recent communiqués he finds several anomalies. Picard then decides to take Enterprise back to Earth to get some answers. In a twist, Starfleet command welcomes Enterprise’s return and invites Picard and Riker to a dinner in their honor.
However, it is a trap. Picard knows it, but can he and Riker, who is to stay onboard to keep an eye on a visiting suspect Admiral, find a way to defeat the trap and save Starfleet and the Federation?

Log Entries:
*First Officer's Log, Stardate 41775.5. We are en route to the ocean world of Pacifica. While our mission is scientific in nature, we look forward to the warm, blue waters and fine beaches that make Pacifica a jewel of the galaxy.
*Captain's Personal Log, Stardate 41776.1. The apparent death of Walker Keel has had a powerful impact on me. I now believe there may be a cancer growing within the ranks of Starfleet. As a result, I have alerted my Executive Officer to the suspicions voiced by Keel and the others.
*Captain's Personal Log, Supplemental. While it is quite unusual for a starship to return to Earth we seem to be left with no other choice. I have apprised the remaining bridge crew of our situation.
*Captain's Log, Stardate 41780.2. How difficult after all these years of learning to respect life to be forced to destroy it. But there seems to be no alternative. Admiral Quinn is expected to make a full recovery. There is no trace of the parasite which took control of him. We'll never know how many of these lifeforms infiltrated Starfleet but it seems they could not survive without the mother creature which had taken over Commander Remmick. | A plot line which was dropped would have had the aliens here signaling the Borg at the end. |

After Riker asks Geordi for their ETA to Pacifica, he has the Lieutenant increase speed to Warp 6. Geordi then "repeats" Riker's command incorrectly by saying, "Aye, sir. Full impulse." |
