Stardate: 42761.3 Q, from the Q continuum, returns to the Enterprise to toy with Picard and the crew. Q asks to become a member of the crew, but when he is rebuffed, he sends Enterprise out of the Alpha quadrant and into an unknown part of space. Here, Q warns them about the dangers they will face as they “go where no one has gone before.”

The danger turns out to come from a deadly aggressive machine like race made up of part human, part machine, cyborg-like people, known as the Borg. As the Borg approach Enterprise, Picard tries to make friendly overtures, but the Borg response is that the crew will be “assimilated.” Enterprise’s defenses prove no match for the Borg’s Cube that is attempting to “assimilate” them.

Can Picard save the ship and crew from certain assimilation into this machine like race, and what personal sacrifice must he make in order to secure their escape?

Episode Notes
Log Entries:
*First Officer's Log, Stardate 42761.3. We have not been able to determine why or how Captain Picard left the Enterprise. We can't even be certain he is in the missing shuttle although that is the assumption on which we are proceeding. For the last six hours, we've been searching without success.
*Captain's Log, Stardate 42761.9. Despite Guinan's warning, I feel compelled to investigate this unexplored sector of the galaxy before heading back.
*Captain's Log, supplemental. We have been attacked without provocation by an alien race which Guinan calls the Borg. It appears that we have neutralised their vessel. Commander Riker is leading an away team in an attempt to learn more about them.
*Captain's Log, supplemental. We are unable to maintain the gap between the Enterprise and the Borg ship.

According to the atlas Star Trek: Star Charts, System J25, where the U.S.S. Enterprise comes into contact with the Borg Cube in 2365, is located in the Beta Quadrant. Also in the atlas, Seven of Nine and her parents first made first contact with the Borg aboard the Raven in 2356 (Star Trek: Voyager episodes "The Raven" and the "Dark Frontier" story arc). From the incident with the Raven, in which contact with the Borg took place in the Delta Quadrant, to System J25, it is apparant that in 2365 the Borg were headed towards Federation space.
