Episode Summary |
| |
Stardate: 43625.2 A time rift opens up in front of the Enterprise. A battered and abused starship comes through from 22 years in the past. It is the Enterprise-C, the predecessor to the modern ship. A terrible battle which almost destroyed it has opened the rift. As the Enterprise-C comes through the rift, however, the end of its presence in the past drastically alters the present, and Lt. Worf is replaced by the formerly deceased Tasha Yar...The Enterprise-C's failure to be where it needed to be has led to a very different present, victim of a long and drawn-out war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, leading to the death of billions. Only Guinan senses the change, and, warning Picard, he must make a choice -- to send back the ship through the rift, to almost certain doom, trusting Guinan's assurances that his present was never meant to be. Or to save the 125 surviving crewmembers. | | There are no foreign summaries for this episode: Contribute |

Episode Notes |
| |
This episode did remarkably well, receiving a 13.1 rating for the time period in which it aired (which varied due to syndication across a two-week time frame) -- this 13.1 rating, representing over 12 million households, gave it the third highest rating for any show in the series. | This episodes, along with the season 3/4 bridging episodes The Best of Both Worlds, Part I/II, are generally cited in most lists as the top three ST:TNG episodes. This episode, along with The Best of Both Worlds, is included on the special release DVD The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and this episode ranked first in Entertainment Weekly's "Top 10 Episodes" for ST:TNG's 20th anniversary. In addition, writers John Logan and Roberto Orci (authors of the scripts for Star Trek: Nemesis, and the J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek reboot, respectively) both cite this episode as one of their favorite episodes and a serious influence. | Log Entries:
*Military log, Combat Date 43625.2. While investigating an unusual radiation anomaly, the Enterprise has encountered what could almost be called a ghost from its own past - the Enterprise-C, the immediate predecessor to this battleship.
*Military log, supplemental. Lieutenant Tasha Yar has transferred to the Enterprise-C, where she has taken over tactical duties. Meanwhile, our long-range scanners have picked up Klingon battle cruisers on an intercept course. | This is the final episode in which all nine original cast members appear. | Beverly:
She mentions Dr. Selar, who only appeared in one episode. | Chris McDonald was one of the finalists for the role of Riker. |

Episode Quotes |
| |
Captain Picard: Who is to say that this history is any less proper than the other?
Guinan: I suppose I am.
Captain Picard: Not good enough, dammit! Not good enough! I will not ask them to die!
Guinan: Forty billion people have already died! This war's not supposed to be happening! You've got to send those people back to correct this!
Captain Picard: And what is to guarantee that if they go back they will succeed? Every instinct is telling me this is wrong, it is dangerous, it is futile!
Guinan: We've known each other a long time. You have never known me to impose myself on anyone or take a stance based on trivial or whimsical perceptions. This timeline must not be allowed to continue. Now, I've told you what you must do. You have only your trust in me to help you decide to do it. | Captain Picard: The war is going very badly for the Federation, far worse than is generally known. Starfleet Command believes that defeat is inevitable. Within six months, we may have no choice but to surrender.
Garrett: Are you saying all this may be a result of our arrival here?
Captain Picard: One more ship will make no difference in the here and now but, 22 years ago, one ship could have stopped this war before it started. | Captain Picard: You don't belong on that ship, Lieutenant!
Tasha: No, Captain Garrett belongs on that ship. But she's dead.... And I think there is a certain logic in this request (for transfer to the Enterprise-C).
Captain Picard: There's no logic in this at all... whether they succeed or not. Enterprise-C will be destroyed.
Tasha: But Captain, at least with someone at Tactical they will have a chance to defend themselves well. It may be a matter of seconds or minutes but those could be the minutes that change history. Guinan says I died a senseless death in the other time line. I didn't like the sound of that, Captain. I've always known the risks that come with a Starfleet Uniform. If I'm to die in one, I'd like my death to count for something.
Captain Picard: Lieutenant. Permission granted. | Captain Picard: Attention all hands. As you know, we could outrun the Klingon vessels. But, we must protect the Enterprise-C until she enters the temporal rift. And we must succeed! Let's make sure that history never forgets...the name...Enterprise. Picard out. | Guinan: Geordi, tell me about...Tasha Yar. |
