Title: Future Imperfect
English language supports a number of different verb tenses, one of which is called the perfect aspect, which is used to convey the consequences of an action, rather than an action in itself.
It has three main forms, the present perfect, the past perfect (also called the "pluperfect"), and the future perfect tense. An example of each would be:
Present perfect -- "John has gone to the store."
Pluperfect --"John had gone to the store before his wife gave him the shopping list."
Future perfect -- "John will have gone to the store by this evening"
The title hearkens to the last of these, as a play on the term. Since the future created by the boy and the machines wasn't perfect -- it had flaws which only Riker could recognize, it represented an "imperfect future", and hence the title. |
