Analysis

Wesley: The most hated, but still very popular member of the ST:TNG regular cast...

While not a terrible episode in and of itself, this episode is a prime example of what made the Wesley Crusher character so despised among one segment of the fans. In this as in all too many episodes, the plot exhibits what I fancifully refer to as "Deus Ex Wesley" (more accurately, "Wesley Ex Machina", but that lacks the poetic ring) -- plots which center all too much on Wesley demonstrating technical competence and ability far beyond that which anyone else his age should demonstrate. Further, given that his test scores were inadequate, at first, to get him into Starfleet Academy, it also seems odd that he would come up with solutions when the entire crew of the best ship in Starfleet had failed.

In retrospect, this is partly mitigated by the events shown in Journey's End (07x20), in which events occur which would bolster a justification for Wesley's ability. As of the eps prior to that, however, Wesley's tendency to all too often be the one into whose hands the writers put the solution to the show's McGuffin into, made a substantial class of SF fans in general, and some "only" ST:TNG fans as well, hate Wesley's guts, as he generally represented a cheap solution and hence cheapened the quality of the SF. Since Star Trek, from its initial inception in the 1960s well into the early 1990s represented just about the only good SF regularly on American television, SF fans were rather vocal when it fell short of this charge.

While Wesley filled his purpose of giving younger fans of the show someone to identify with, and thus he was quite popular with one segment of the ST fan base, he thus also managed to be one of the most despised and hated members of the cast by a different segment as well.
