Stardate: 1513.1 When the crew goes to a distant archaeological outpost to conduct routine medical examinations, they find the husband and wife team healthy. However, each of the Enterprise’s away team seems to see the woman with a different familiar face. The wife becomes a major threat to the Enterprise crew when it appears that she is responsible for the death of several crewmen who died after the removal of all salt in their body. The lone male survivor is unconcerned and hostile toward the crew's plight, and resists their attempt to evacuate him from the planet.

| This is the first episode, production wise, in which Captain Kirk (William Shatner) refers to Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) as "Bones". | This is the only time in the series when the camera view of a phaser is from the top instead of from the side. | Although this was the first episode to air, it was the sixth produced. | Alfred Ryder's right arm was broken during the filming of this episode. | Crewman Darnell (Bruce Watson) was the first Star Trek character to die. | This is the only episode in which Dr. McCoy's quarters are shown. | The original title of this episode was "The Unreal McCoy". | Alexander Courage composed the musical score during this episode that would be later be re-used throughout the first season. | The sound of the phaser beam striking Professor Alfred Ryder (Alfred Ryder) is, in fact, that of a ricocheting bullet. | The opening credits simply say "William Shatner" and "Leonard Nimoy" with no "Starring." | James Doohan, but they use a dubbed line of dialogue from another episode, played over the communicator, when Kirk beams up to the ship. |

| Kirk: Shall we pick some flowers, Doctor? When a man visits an old girlfriend... she usually expects something like that.
McCoy: Is that how you get girls to like you-- by bribing them? | Kirk: Something wrong, Darnell?
Darnell: Excuse me, sir. Ma'am, if I didn't know better... I'd swear I knew you on Wrigley's Pleasure Planet. You're exactly like a girl...
McCoy: Less mouth, Darnell! | Kirk: How your lost love affects your vision is not my concern, Doctor! I've lost a man! I want to know what killed him! | Uhura: Starship base requesting explanation of our delay, sir. Space Commander Dominguez says we have supplies he urgently needs.
Kirk: Tell Jose he'll get his chili peppers soon. They're prime Mexican reds. I handpicked them. But he won't die without them. | Kirk: It's a mystery. I don't like mysteries! They give me a bellyache, and I've got a beauty right now. | Sulu: May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet. | Spock: Why risk your life for his?
Kirk: He's just trying to frighten us... and he's doing a pretty good job. | Crater: Earth history, remember? Like the passenger pigeon or the buffalo. Ooh! I feel strange.
Kirk: Just stunned. You'll be able to think in a minute.
Spock: The Earth buffalo. What about it?
Crater: Once there were millions of them; prairies black with them. One herd covered three whole states. When they moved -- like thunder. | Kirk: You bleed too much, Crater. You're too pure and noble. Are you saving the last of its kind... or has this become Crater's private heaven here? This thing becomes wife, lover, best friend, wise man, fool, idol, slave. It isn't bad to have everyone in the universe at your beck and call. You win all the arguments. |

| What Changed in the Remastered Version
Along with the usual HD improvements, M-113 gets an orbital upgrade and there are several panoramic shots of M-113 incorporating the sound stage constructs. The phaser shot that knocks out Crater isn't retouched, and the "ricochet" sound effect is still used.
