This episode was the second pilot filmed for the network to try and sell the series.
| Leonard Nimoy (Spock) is the only actor to appear in both this episode and the first pilot, "The Cage".
| The Enterprise sets used in this episode were originally built for "The Cage".
| This is the only appearance of the phaser rifle on the series.
| This is the only episode in which Leonard Nimoy (Spock) wears a gold uniform instead of his standard blue one.

This episode boasts the highest number of Enterprise fatalities at 12: the nine dead crewmen at the beginning, Kelso, Dehner, and Mitchell.
| Although never made official, it is commonly assumed that the "blonde lab technician" referenced here is Dr. Carol Marcus, who Kirk later ends up having a son with. The non-canon novels make reference to this "fact."

What Changed in the Remastered Version
Opening and closing shots feature the Enterprise (CGI model) transiting a nicely crafted nebular cloud. The Galactic Barrier gets a very impressive CGI enhancement. So do the orbital view and surface shots on Delta Vega, with cloud effects and better matte shots contributing to a more realistic planetary surface feel. The establishing shot of the lithium cracking station gets some animation showing Kirk and Dehner entering the facility, linking the scene to the preceding scene more naturally. The phaser rifle shot at Mitchell gets an upgrade featuring a more solid beam and a multicolored splash.
