The Enterprise has travelled back in time to the year 1968 and are in orbit around Earth. They are monitoring transmissions on a fact-finding mission to see how Earth survived such a terrible time. While in orbit, they are struck by a transporter beam from a thousand light years away, and a human dressed in a 20th century business suit and carrying a cat appears. The man, Gary Seven, insists that he is part of this era and Kirk must let him go to Earth, or history will be irrevocably altered.

Episode Notes

This episode takes place entirely in 1968, with no scenes in the usual 23rd Century setting.

From the point of view of the Enterprise crew, this episode takes places over one year after the events of "Tomorrow is Yesterday", which is based primarily in July 1969.

Gene Roddenberry created this episode as a pilot for a new series with Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and Isis preventing alterations to history, The effort never panned out.

In the original script, the episode would have begun with Kirk arriving on the bridge to find the crew watching an episode of Bonanza and believing they had gone too far back into the past.

Robert Lansing is listed as a Guest Star in the credits after the main theme: the first and only time someone is so listed.

Although not in the credits, Lincoln Demyan's character is Lipton, Bruce Mars' character is Charley, and Paul Baxley's character is Freeman.

Episode Quotes

Gary Seven: Captain Kirk, my name is Gary Seven. I am a human being from the 20th century.
Kirk: Humans of the 20th century do not go beaming around the galaxy, Mr. Seven.
Gary Seven: I've been living on another planet far more advanced. I was beaming to Earth when you intercepted me.
Kirk: The location of that planet?
Gary Seven: They wish their existence kept secret. Even in your time, it will remain unknown.
Scotty: It's impossible to hide a whole planet.
Gary Seven: Impossible for you. Not for them.

Kirk: What do you make of the cat, Mr. Spock?
Spock: Quite a lovely animal, Captain. I find myself strangely drawn to it.

Gary Seven: Computer, I am a class I supervisor. You are ordered to override previous instructions and answer my questions.
Beta 5 Computer: I am a Beta-5 computer capable of analytical decisions. Please confirm identity as supervisor by describing nature of agents and mission here.
Gary Seven: Computer, I caution you. I have little love for Beta-5 snobbery.

Beta 5 Computer: Location of agents unreported for three days.
Gary Seven: Why didn't you say so in the first place? No, don't answer that. Simply begin search immediately. Recheck all news broadcasts, decode any government intercepted message...
Beta 5 Computer: I am aware of proper search procedures, 194.

Gary Seven: Scan and identify female present.
Beta 5 Computer: Roberta Lincoln. Human. Profession -- secretary. Employed by 347 and 201. Description -- age 20, 5'7", 120 pounds. Hair presently tinted honey blonde. Although behavior appears erratic, possesses high I.Q. Birthmarks...
Roberta Lincoln: Hey.
Beta 5 Computer: Small mole on left shoulder. Somewhat larger star-shaped mark on her...
Roberta Lincoln: Hey, watch it!

Roberta Lincoln: I want to believe you. I know this world needs help. That's why some of my generation are kind of crazy and rebels. We wonder if we'll be alive at 30.

Spock: (to Kirk) Without facts, the decision cannot be made logically. You must rely on your human intuition.

Gary Seven: What else do your record tapes show?
Spock: I'm afraid we can't reveal everything we know, Mr. Seven.
Kirk: We could say that Mr. Seven and Miss Lincoln have some interesting experiences in store.
Spock: I think we could say that.

Analysis

What Changed in the Remastered Version
General improvements cited on the main series page. The orbital shots of Earth have much greater detail and the Moon can be seen in several shots. A close-up shot of Seven's servo has a small blue energy "twinkle" added. The blue-swirling teleport effect of Seven's transporter is touched up.
