The Enterprise has travelled back in time to the year 1968 and are in orbit around Earth. They are monitoring transmissions on a fact-finding mission to see how Earth survived such a terrible time. While in orbit, they are struck by a transporter beam from a thousand light years away, and a human dressed in a 20th century business suit and carrying a cat appears. The man, Gary Seven, insists that he is part of this era and Kirk must let him go to Earth, or history will be irrevocably altered.

Episode Notes
This episode takes place entirely in 1968, with no scenes in the usual 23rd Century setting.
From the point of view of the Enterprise crew, this episode takes places over one year after the events of "Tomorrow is Yesterday", which is based primarily in July 1969.
Gene Roddenberry created this episode as a pilot for a new series with Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and Isis preventing alterations to history, The effort never panned out.
In the original script, the episode would have begun with Kirk arriving on the bridge to find the crew watching an episode of Bonanza and believing they had gone too far back into the past.
Robert Lansing is listed as a Guest Star in the credits after the main theme: the first and only time someone is so listed.
Although not in the credits, Lincoln Demyan's character is Lipton, Bruce Mars' character is Charley, and Paul Baxley's character is Freeman.

What Changed in the Remastered Version
