  Episode Quotes
Kirk: When a man of Scotty's years falls in love, the loneliness of his life is suddenly revealed. His heart once throbbed to the sound of the ship's engines; now, all he can see is the woman.

Chekov: I didn't think Mr. Scott would go for the brainy type.
Sulu: I don't think he's even noticed she has a brain.

Kirk: Scotty, where have you been? Where are you?
Scotty: In the sickbay.
Kirk: Are you sick?
Scotty: Ach, no. I was just checkin' on the lass. She's going to be fine though, there's nothing wrong with her.
Kirk: Well, I'm relieved to hear your prognosis, Mr. Scott. Is the doctor there with you or will I find him in engineering?

McCoy: Somehow I find transporting into the darkness unnerving.

Scotty: Listen to me. I've told ya what strange tricks a space trip can play on your mind. Now, that's all it is.
Mira: No, Scotty.
Scotty: Have ya ever had visions of the future events before this?
Mira: Never.
Scotty: Well, if you ask me, nobody ever has. That seein' to the future, it's pure bunk. Ya know that, don't you?
Mira: I've always believed it.
Scotty: And you were perfectly right.
Mira: Then what is it, Scotty? What's frightening me? Ever since that storm hit, I've, I've had such strange thoughts, such feelings of terror…
Scotty: Space!
Mira: Space.
Scotty: That's all it is.
Mira: Then I don't have to report it?
Scotty: Well, if you want to spend the rest of the trip in sick bay. But what good would that do? Dr. McCoy can no more cure it than he can a cold.

Kirk: You can't be from Zetar. All life was destroyed there long ago.
Alien: Yes, all corporeal life was destroyed.
Kirk: Then what are you? - The desires, the hopes, the mind... and the will of the last hundred of Zetar. The force of our life could not be wiped out.
Kirk: All things die.
Alien: At the proper time.

Lt. Mira Romaine: Life was given to me. It is mine. I want to live it out.

Kirk: Bones, are you able to judge the long-range effects on Lt. Romaine?
McCoy: When the personality of a human is involved, predictions are hazardous.
Spock: Particularly where humans are involved.

Kirk: Well, this is an Enterprise first. Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Engineer Scott find themselves in complete agreement-–can I stand the strain?

  Episode Goofs
The overhead bridge shot in the teaser features Hadley (William Blackburn) at the navigator's position, and then switches to Chekov. Kirk's hair is also shorter. The shot is unused footage from "The Galileo Seven," accounting for the mistake.

  Analysis
What Changed in the Remastered Version
General improvements cited on the main series page. The orbital shots of the planet on which Memory Alpha is located get a surface upgrade and the Memory Alpha complex is clearly visible from orbit on what is now a smaller planet/planetoid. The space shots of the Zetar gestalt are significantly cleaned up and incorporated into new scenes with the CGI Enterprise.
