Episode Notes

This is the pilot episode of the spin-off series from Stargate SG-1.

This is not the only program that Richard Dean Anderson has been in that had an episode with the word "Atlantis" in it. Back in his MacGyver days, one of two films he made after the series ended had the title MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis.

Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett) previously portrayed Dr. Ernest Littlefield (the younger one), the first human in the 20th Century to go through the Stargate, in the Stargate SG-1 season one episode "The Torment of Tantalus".

Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill) and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) are the only actors to appear in the pilots of both Stargate SG-1 and this series.

This episode reveals that Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) is Canadian.

Teyla Emmagan was originally called Mikala.

One of original characters envisaged for the series was Dr. Benjamin Ingraham, an African-Canadian astrophysicist. Although he is Caucasian, David Hewlett was cast in the role. It was ultimately decided by the producers to bring back the character of Dr. Rodney McKay, played by Hewlett in three episodes of Stargate SG-1.

Rainbow Francks and his sister Cree Summer have both been involved in projects related to Atlantis. Rainbow with this series and Cree with Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

This episode reveals that Dr. McKay's name is Rodney. It is later revealed in the Season Three episode "McKay and Mrs. Miller" that his full name is Meredith Rodney McKay.
