Ronon is sparring with McKay, who isn’t doing very well. Sheppard and Weir come in to announce they’ve lost contact with the Taranians, who were colonizing a planet after being evacuated from Taranis. Sheppard takes his team to investigate and finds their colony abandoned. McKay picks up a single lifesign below them. There are abandoned tunnels below the village and Sheppard’s team goes down to investigate. Teyla finds a cocoon of some sort that is now empty.
Sheppard contacts Atlantis and lets Weir know what’s going on, and she insists on sending in a marine backup team. Ronon discovers the corpses of the Taranians, all wounded on the neck. Sheppard recognizes the injuries and then Ronon discovers a lab containing an Iratus bug. The lifesign is heading for them while Lt. Negley checks in to let them know he’s arrived. They go to find the lifesign. The creature, a giant bug-like alien, attacks them and they are barely able to drive it off.
Back at the Gate, a Wraith Dart flies out and teleports up Negley and his team. Sheppard’s team explores and finds more of the cocoons.
Back on Atlantis, Weir receives a brief transmission supposedly from Negley, saying everything is okay. In the tunnels, the creatures start to emerge from their cocoons and Sheppard destroys them with explosives. They go to find the original alien and are unable to contact Negley. Unable to track down the creature, they head back to the gate and speculate that someone was trying to create a hybrid creature by breeding the Iratus with the Taranians. They get to the gate only to discover that a vital control crystal has been removed. And in the tunnels, a Wraith arrives and discovers the cocoons have been destroyed. The Wraith? Michael.
The team returns to the tunnels and Teyla senses… something. They pick up another lifesign on the sensors. Teyla is cut off from the others while the insect creature attacks the others. They drive it off and find Teyla gone, and briefly track her before losing the lifesign readings.
Teyla wakes up strapped to a table and Michael explains that he is creating the creatures after he was forced to leave the Wraith because they sensed his “unclean” half-human nature. Now he is trying to breed insect soldiers to act as cannon fodder for him. He explains that he let the Iratus bugs absorb as much human DNA as possible then augmented its breeding and created the perfect animal to do his bidding. The creature arrives in the chamber.
The remaining team members come to a locked door and try to get through, while Michael tells Teyla that there are other breeding chambers and other planets where he is performing his experiments. He plans to leave Teyla for his creature but when Sheppard and the others blast through the doors, he sends it to kill them. He explains to Teyla that he captured Negley and the others and persuaded him to transmit the message back to Atlantis. He then releases an Iratus bug to feed on Teyla.
Sheppard and the others find the dead marines and they continue their search. The creature attacks McKay, and Ronon and Sheppard manage to kill it. They then find Teyla and kill the bug just before it would kill her. Rodney checks the computers while Ronon and Sheppard go to hunt down Michael. Ronon insists that they finally all admit that the retro-virus project is a failure.
Rodney shuts down the EM field blocking their radios and scanners, and picks up dozens of lifesigns. Michael has released his creatures, which close in on Ronon and Sheppard. Sheppard catches Michael and demands the control crystal, but a creature attacks Sheppard and Michael makes his escape. Everyone gets to the surface via the air shafts and they spot Michael’s fighter. Sheppard goes to get it while the creatures close in on Ronon. Sheppard lifts off in the fighter and beams Ronon aboard just in time.
McKay and Teyla are surrounded on all sides and Michael stuns them, but Sheppard beams them aboard and they get back to Atlantis. McKay analyzes the data and realizes that they led Michael to the Taranians. The
Daedalus scans the planet and finds nothing, but locates the control crystal. They have no way to track Michael and realize he’ll be coming for them.
