The Kindred (1) - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Teyla and the Atlantis team hold a funeral ceremony for her dead mate Kanaan, to culminate in the burning of his body on a pyre. However, Kanaan comes back to life and calls out to Teyla for help. Carter and Sheppard hold her back and she looks on as he bursts into flame… and she wakes up in her bed in Atlantis.

Dr. Keller reports to Carter that they’ve picked up reports of a plague that is sweeping across the Pegasus galaxy, with an 80% fatality rate. McKay approaches Teyla and gives her recordings of his scientific theories to play for her unborn child so he’ll grow up smart. Teyla is duly thankful and decides to tell him about her vision. He doesn’t say it to her but admits to Sheppard that he doesn’t believe her. That night, Teyla has another vision where she is in a forest with Kanaan. He asks her to save him and the rest of the missing Athosians and gives her a pendant. He tells her to go to the merchant that she remembers him purchasing it from, in the village of Croya. She tells Carter and Sheppard what happened and they authorize a mission. A local merchant tells Teyla that the man who sold it to her is dead, from the spreading disease.

On Atlantis, Keller has identified the plague as based on a virus created by the Hoff, who sought a way to wipe out the Wraith. However, now it is targeting human and Wraith alike.

Returning form the mission, Sheppard takes McKay with him to Hoff. Teyla has another vision of Kanaan who insists she go back to Croya. Carter reluctantly assigns Major Lorne and his team to accompany Teyla.

On Hoff, Sheppard and McKay discover that the planet’s scientific research files have been looted and there’s nothing left to work from.

Teyla finds a merchant with Kanaan’s pendant. The man reveals he bought it from a trader who also sold him other pieces of Athosian jewelry that Teyla recognizes. She sets up an arrangement so the merchant will point the man out to her when he returns.

Sheppard and McKay return to Atlantis where they get a signal from Todd the Wraith, who wants a meeting with them and sends coordinates.

The trader arrives in Croya and after a brief struggle, Teyla captures him. He refuses to talk to Lorne but when Teyla kicks him to the floor, he talks, revealing he found a box full of the goods near a dumping site for corpses. However, there were no Athosians dumped there. She forces him to take them there but on the way a Wraith Dart ship teleports her away.

Sheppard, Ronon, and McKay meet with Todd. He reveals that the Wraith are dying of the Hoff virus and wants to help them create a cure. However, he only wants it for his faction. They’re reluctant but he offers them the name of the person responsible for the new virus.

Teyla wakes up I her cell and meets with her captor: the half-human/half-Wraith hybrid, Michael. He reveals that he captured the missing Athosians and using them to help him in his experiments, and that someone else is helping him.

Upon getting word of Teyla’s capture, Sheppard’s team confronts Todd and figure that Michael was involved. Todd confirms their guess agrees to find out where the hybrid is in return for their research information on the Hoff virus. In return for part of the research, he supplies them with the location of a planet.

Michael visits Teyla and she insists that she eat for the sake of her child. He argues that as they are both hybrids of human and Wraith, they should work together. When she doesn’t buy that argument, he says that he has plans for her child. He then brings in Kanaan, who is under his mental influence. Michael explains that he used Kanaan to send Teyla false visions and is using the kidnapped Athosians to create a new army of human-Wraith hybrids under his control, and who don’t have to feed.

The Atlantis teams arrive at the planetary coordinates via the Daedalus and go down to the surface, where they end up in a firefight with human guards. They take out one guard who reveals they’re waiting for a special prisoner to arrive. A Hive cruiser arrives and attacks the Daedalus and Sheppard warns Colonel Caldwell not to destroy it so they can recover the prisoner. Caldwell damages it and it flees into hyperspace. Meanwhile Sheppard get to the cell under heavy guard and find the prison: Dr. Carson Beckett.
