Trio - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Carter takes Keller and Rodney with her to M5V-801 to talk to the natives, who need to move due to respiratory problems caused by Genii mining. The Genii used the natives as slaves in their mining operation then left the planet, and the natives refuse to leave unless Atlantis pays them. Carter has to negotiate with them and wants Keller and Rodney along for their scientific expertise. They arrive on the planet through the Stargate and Rodney falls through a hole in the planet's surface, landing in an underground Genii mining facility. Carter and Keller move to the edge of the hole, which collapses and drops them in as well.

They explore the chamber and find one door sealed. Another one is open but leads to a huge chasm, and they determine that the facility they're in is on stilts suspended over an abyss. They have five hours before they're expected to check in through the gate, but the area is unstable due to the Genii mining and their weight threatens to drop the facility into the chasm. They try to stack up crates to get back up to the hole in the ceiling but they can't support their stacked weight and collapse.

Rodney searches the room and finds ropes and grappling hooks, and he goes over the Genii files while Carter and Keller knot the rope so they can climb it. Two young native boys look down into the hole, but refuse to say anything because they're afraid their parents will punish them for exploring the forbidden facility. Rodney doesn't take that well and when he starts yelling, the kids run off. Finally the rope is ready but as they prepare to throw it up, the boys arrive with their friends to show off their new find. They still refuse to let their parents know what's going on and run off when Rodney yells at them.

As the man, Rodney insists on throwing the grappling hook but ends up breaking a gas pipe open and starting a fire. Sam shuts off the valve and then takes over, but there's nothing solid for it to hook on to. Rodney suggests they climb up and Keller comes up with a bar bet that involves three cups and knives, and using the knives to support a fourth cup in the middle. They set up a similar arrangement using beams but one of them breaks during a tremor and Sam breaks her leg in the fall.

Keller warns that Carter may have internal bleeding and needs treatment within the next hour. McKay then uses a pipe and a detonator and makes a makeshift cannon. He then fires the grappling hook up through the hole with a iron pipe for an anchor. However, the detonations sets off another tremor and the room tilts on its supports. Keller falls through the door into the chasm but is holding onto the rope. Rodney manages to grab the rope, badly abrading his hands but breaking her fall. Hanging in the chasm, Keller can see daylight and a tunnel leading to the surface. With the hole above sealed by the tremor, they have no choice but to explore the new tunnel. Keller swings over to the mineshaft and Rodney manages to rig a seat to lower Carter to the tunnel below. Finally he climbs down and with a little persuading manages to swing over despite his fear of heights. As he does so, the facility collapses into the chasm.

The team goes back to Atlantis where takes care of Rodney's and Carter's injuries. Keller thanks McKay for saving her and asks him out for a drink.
