On a distant planet, two locals are making their way through the mist when they see a shadowy figure up ahead, standing stock still. They approach and ask if the person needs help. The figure turns and the two men run away in terror but are picked off one at a time by the figure, wearing a gas mask.
One Year Later
An Atlantis team consisting of Major Anne Teldy, Dr. Alison Porter, Sgt. Mehra, and Sgt. Vega, explore an underground facility and find a gas mask. They see something disturbing and call Atlantis for back-up. Beckett is preparing to return to Earth over Rodney’s objections when Sheppard comes in and informs him that Teldy’s team has found one of Michael’s bases and they need Carson’s expertise. Sheppard and Beckett go to the planet where they meet with Teldy’s all-women team and then go to the underground laboratory. It’s seemingly deserted and they find twelve stasis pods. Porter disables the security systems and she and Beckett go to work trying to determine what’s in the pod. While Mehra stands guard, Sheppard, Teldy, and Vega to the local village to see if the inhabitants can tell them anything.
Carson determines that the stasis pods hold more of Michael’s hybrid experiments, but these are different insofar as they have other animals mixed in with their Wraith/human DNA. Michael considered them a success… but the new hybrid mix is no longer a person.
Sheppard and the others get to the village only to find it deserted. They find one man, Mirellus, who explains that when people started disappearing a yea ago under mysterious circumstances, the other villagers abandoned the town. Mirellus is from another nearby village and saw Sheppard and the others so came to warn them. Mirellus leaves while Carson calls to inform them about the hybrids and Sheppard convinces Mirellus to stay. Mehra brings Beckett and Porter to the village and they hole up in an abandoned tavern while Sheppard, Teldy, and Vega go to Mirellus’ village for more information. They are all unaware that in the underground facility, the stasis pods are starting to open.
Sheppard and his team move through the ever-growing mist, which affects their lights and their radios. Carson flirts with Porter and a mildly disgusted Mehra goes outside to check the perimeter. She finds a well and drops a rock in. After hearing the sound of it falling below, she walks away… unaware that mist is starting to pour out of the well behind her. Meanwhile, Sheppard and the others find Mirellus, who warns that there is a demon in the mist. Suddenly Vega is yanked back into the mist. Sheppard and Teldy go after her but she’s been killed in seconds. Figures move out of the mist and Sheppard and Teldy open fire, then retreat back to the village with Mirellus. The team at the tavern hear the gunshots and Mehra goes to investigate.
Sheppard, Teldy, and Mirellus retreat to the underground facility and discover that someone opened the stasis pods. Mirellus confesses that he did it to discover if his missing wife was in one of them. As they head back to the village, Beckett and Porter are unable to find Mehra. Carson goes outside to look for her and one of the figures comes at him. Remaining stock still, he discovers the creature hunts by sense of sound and emits the mist from gills on its neck. His radio goes off and the creature lunges at him, but Mehra arrives and shoots it dead. They go back to the tavern but Porter has wandered off to find them. Sheppard, Teldy, and Mirellus arrive and Carson explains what he’s discovered, and realizes that Michael abandoned the project because he couldn’t control his own creations.
Sheppard, Teldy, and Mehra go out to search for Porter while the creatures yank Mirellus out of the building and to his death. The creatures start to break in, while outside Sheppard and Mehra find Porter. They spot what they think is Teldy but it’s one of the creatures with a glow stick thrust into its shoulders. They kill it and they head back to the tavern after finding Teldy. Meanwhile, Carson has fled the tavern and is running through the mist. The others figure that there are dozens of underground tunnels and one leads from the facility to the well. Porter suggests they use her computer to set off an ultra-sonic frequency to attract the creatures, and then they use a C-4 charge as a distraction and ambush their opponents. The women surround the well while Sheppard puts the computer in the bucket of the well. He lowers it down and one of the creatures attacks him. Sheppard drops the C-4 and manages to shoot the creature, just as Carson arrives, drawn by the gunshots. They search for the C-4 without success as the creatures move in. Teldy sees them but can’t do anything with Sheppard and Carson in the line of fire. The C-4 goes off and she and the other two open fire, killing off the creatures. They move forward and make contact with Sheppard, who got Carson into the well and took refuge in the catacombs below.
Everyone enters the catacombs and goes to the facility. Porter pleads fatigue and Mehra stays with her, while Sheppard, Teldy, and Carson go to examine the stasis pods. They find a secret chamber with more open stasis pods. Going back, they see the part of the facility where Porter and Mehra are is filled with mist. More creatures attack from the mist and Sheppard and the others finish them off, while Porter and Mehra come from the other side.
Later on Atlantis, Carson is once more packing to leave and Rodney is still trying to convince him to stay. Sheppard comes in but this time just to see if Carson needs help moving. Carson informs him that Porter is recovering nicely and asks that Sheppard suggests to Woolsey that she be assigned to work with him back on Earth. Sheppard agrees and they stroll out, while Rodney somewhat jealously asks who Carson’s new friend is
