Outsiders - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Sheppard and his team visit Beckett, who is providing medical assistance to a village. He explains that some of the Balarans, who Michael tested the Hoffan drug on, fled their planet and were taken in by the villagers. The Hoffan drug makes the Balarans toxic to any Wraith who tries to feed on them. One of the Balarans, Novo, is working with Beckett as a volunteer assistant. The team’s conversation is interrupted when they hear a scream. Going to investigate, they find a squad of Wraith soldiers in the village.

The Commander Wraith asks to talk to the person in charge. The village head, Elson, steps forward and the Commander Wraith tells him that he knows there are Balarans are among them. The villagers can turn the Balarans over… or the entire village will be wiped out by the Hive ship arriving that night. He gives Elson his word that if the villagers turn over the Balarans, they’ll be spared. The Wraith depart and Beckett has to explain to Nov and the other Balarans that they are not just immune to Wraith feeding as they believed, but are highly toxic to the creatures.

While Ronon and Teyla check out the Stargate, Sheppard meets with the village elders. Elson and Renni believe they shouldn’t betray the Balarans. Jervis takes the opposing view. Sheppard says that the Wraith have no way to identify the Balarans and offers to move the entire village to another planet via the Stargate. The villagers are reluctant to leave their homes and Sheppard gets word that the Stargate is lightly guarded by Wraiths. He warns that the Commander Wraith may not keep their word and the villagers agree to go with his plan. Sheppard goes to get Rodney to help him secure the gate. Beckett wants to go but Sheppard orders him to stay in the village.

As Teyla and Ronon watch the Stargate, they see more Wraith return from patrol to guard it: it’s now impossible to overwhelm the guards and take it back. Sheppard updates the village elders on the situation and tells them that Atlantis most likely will not send reinforcements before the Hive ship arrives. Jervis insists the villagers need to take matters into their own hands. When Sheppard goes back to Beckett’s clinic, he finds that Carson has sent all but the most ill of the Balarans back to their homes. Meanwhile, Jervis and his men round up the Balarans. Novo and her friend Safaris attempt to sneak away but are captured.

Ronon and Teyla return to the clinic and Jervis and his people arrive and try to take away the ill Balarans. Sheppard and his people draw their guns and there’s a brief showdown and Elson orders Jervis to stand down. Jervis refuses and Beckett snaps at him, telling him he might as well kill the Balarans now rather than let them suffer torture at the hands of the Wraith. Jervis backs down and tells them his men have already taken the first group of captive Balarans to the Stargate for delivery to the Wraith. Ronon and Teyla lock up Jervis and his people and they take the remaining Balarans to a nearby mineshaft to hide. The Hive ships arrives on schedule and the Commander Wraith arrives to take custody of the prisoners. Safaris offers them a deal: in return for his people’s freedom he’ll take the Wraith to someone more valuable who is hiding in the village.

Rodney and Beckett are getting some final supplies from the clinic when Safaris brings the Commander Wraith and his men there. The Wraith stun the two men and then the Commander Wraith kills Safaris since he’s outlived his usefulness.

Sheppard, Ronon, and Teyla get to the mine with the remaining Balarans but hear Darts overhead. Unable to contact their teammates, Sheppard returns to the village just in time to see the Commander Wraith teleport up to a Wraith with Rodney and Beckett.

The two men wake up aboard the Hive ship and Rodney finally admits that he’s never actually escaped from a Hive ship on his own. The Commander Wraith takes them to a lab and explains that his lead scientist died trying to perfect a means of detecting the Hoffan drug. Now he orders Beckett to come up with a means of detection or he’ll kill everyone on the planet.

Sheppard interrogates Jervis about how betrayed Beckett to the Wraith. Jervis says that he and his people had no issue with Beckett and that the Balarans betrayed Beckett. Aboard the Hive ship, McKay is unable to access the ship’s control systems and Beckett refuses to come up with a means of detecting the Hoffan drug.

Sheppard goes back to the mine and explains to the Balarans that he has a plan... while Elson listens in. Aboard the Hive ship, Beckett demands a meeting with the Commander Wraith… alone. He leaves Rodney behind and meets with the Commander Wraith, telling him that he won’t help him in detecting the Hoffan drug. The Commander Wraith repeats his threat but Beckett notes that people will die no matter what. The Commander Wraith begins to drain Beckett’s life force… and then realizes the doctor has injected himself with the Hoffan drug. He dies and Beckett shoots his way out and goes back to the lab to rescue Rodney, deleting the research data before they leave. More by luck than skill, Rodney finds a communication panel and contacts Sheppard no the planet. Sheppard wants him to stay aboard the ship and disable the main weapons. Rodney reluctantly agrees and Sheppard leaves for the next part of his plan. After they’re gone, Elson goes to the cell where Jervis and his men are locked up and gives them the key. He says that Jervis was right all along and he should go to the Wraith and bring the invaders to the mine so they can take custody of the remaining Balarans.

The Commander Wraith’s second in command discovers his superior dead and sounds the alarm. Beckett provides cover fire while Rodney disables the ship’s weapons and then finds the way to the Dart launch bay. He and Beckett go there and lock the door, but he’s unable to get the Dart to function with both of them inside. Rodney considers the controls and then comes up with an idea, and tells Beckett to get out and to trust him.

Jervis and his men take the Wraith to the mine only to discover that no one is there. The Wraith find a packet of C-4 and wonder what it is. Jervis doesn’t know… and near the Stargate, Sheppard triggers the remote device, blowing up the Wraith, Jervis, and his people. Elson and the rest of the villagers and Balarans are there: the entire thing was a set up.

The Wraith’s new commander learns of the explosion and discovers he’s unable to open fire on the Stargate. He sends down several Darts to open fire. Meanwhile, Sheppard and his team take out the Wraith guarding the Stargate and start sending people through. The Darts arrive and open fire, and start sweeping the area with teleport beams. However, the first teleport beam deposits two people: Rodney and Beckett. Rodney explains that he stored himself and Beckett in the teleport buffer and set it to beam them down once the Dart passed over the Stargate. With all of the villagers and Balarans through the Stargate, Sheppard and Ronon make it through the wormhole just in time.

Back on Atlantis, Beckett is going over Keller’s files in an attempt to find a cure for his condition. Rodney drops in to visit and Beckett explains that he’ll be departing with the villagers to their new planet because they require his services. He can’t take Keller’s classified research with him, and suggests that Rodney work on it. Rodney, unhappy to lose his friend, offers him dinner and Beckett finally accepts once he realizes how much it means to Rodney.
