In our solar system?
Anyway, this just came to me 3 days ago, you know how the Daedalus class ships visit other planets in the galaxy/galaxies? Why not use them to visit other planets within the solar system? Last time I checked, the NASA guys are dying to get a man on Mars, they could achieve this with those ships so why not do it? Or do the shows' people think that would be too boring? Why not just mention it on the side or something then on the show?
Has anyone ever thought of that?

I thought about something else, if the SGC are short of money, the guys from NASA are taking a lot of it and they are practically doing nothing. The only thing keeping them running the Space programme is to deceive the public, then why not transfer more money from NASA to the SGC? |

Well first of all the spaceships are needed for something else... you know the Ori 
Then it would be to Star Trek alike if they would explore other planets that way. I don't think the writers or whoever is going that way ;-)
The mars issue has also some other complication, how do you explain to the public how you got there? I mean the big deal with the mars is the publicity. The exploring thing is more like a byproduct. |

First they have to announce that they're launching a spaceship that will land on Mars. Then they'll launch something, just for the publicity. Then have the Daedalus or another ship fly a tv crew there and set up a live feed from Mars, then get some astronauts to walk up and down and there you go - a very cheap landing on Mars. It's not like anyone will ever know the difference...  |

Hey, wait! How do we know that NASA HAS NOT been relegated to Earth studies, and the SGC is adding all the data on the Earth’s solar system neighbors (I’ll bet they got the last planet downgraded to a non-planet body. Maybe we just think NASA still does deep space stuff.
However, I agree that the limited number of ships restricts their missions to fighting the evil we know is out there. |

I guess the quick answer is that these are military ships, not for general exploration, and we already know our solar system well enough.
As for the question of colonizing other planets, we should have started doing this years ago through the stargates. Sure, there are a couple of off-planet bases, but given the constant interplanetary threats and how other planets have been wiped out, there's no excuse for still having one one "human" planet.
If a couple of Ori ships attacked Earth, what would be left of our civilization? A few survivors stranded on other planets? That's it?
Forget hostile aliens. What if there was a nuclear war and we virtually destroyed ourselves? Or a plague, or a meteor, or anything else?
