Episode Summary

All of the original members of SG-1 have now left the SGC, and Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell has now been given command of an empty SG-1, as a reward for the work he did in the battle over Antarctica (Episode 7x22). Mitchell tries in vain to get the original members of SG-1 back together, but none of the team seems to want to. That is until Vala Mal Doran, an old "friend" of Daniel's, comes through the gate with an interesting proposition.

This leads the slightly smaller original SG-1 team, with Mitchell, in a new direction, away from the Goa'uld, and in search of more knowledge of the Ancients.

Episode Notes

Ben Browder (Cameron Mitchell) and Beau Bridges (General Landry) join the regular cast in this episode.

This is the first ep where Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) will sport a beard for the first six episodes of the series.

Lexa Doig (Dr. Carolyn Lam) is the real-life wife of Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson). They met during the filming of the Andromeda Season One episode "Star-Crossed." He later returned in the Season Three episode "Day of Judgment, Day of Wrath," in which Christopher Judge (Teal'c) and JR Bourne (Martouf) also appeared.

Ben Browder (Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell) and Claudia Black (Vala) were previously regulars on Farscape together. They played John Crichton and Aeryn Sun respectively.

Amanda Tapping does not appear in this episode.

This is the 174th episode of the series in which Christopher Judge (Teal'c) appears. As of this episode, he has appeared in more episodes than anyone else (although he only appeared in "Disclosure" and "Inauguration" in clips from previous episodes). The only episode of the series thus far in which he did not appear is "Prometheus Unbound". Prior to this, (Samantha Carter) Amanda Tapping was tied with Christopher Judge.

As of this episode, Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill) and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) have both appeared in ten different seasons of Stargate: all nine seasons of Stargate SG-1 and the first season of Stargate: Atlantis.

This episode marks the first reference to the Wraith on the series.

This is the first episode to have the opening sequence shortened dramatically.

Episode Quotes

(As Teal’c leaves his meeting with Mitchell)
Mitchell: Have fun! (then, to no one in particular) Did I mention I’m on a mission from God? Okay, never mind!

Vala: (to Daniel; referring to the Prometheus) Isn't this where I beat you up?

Mitchell: Well, Walter, doesn't look like we're getting the band back together.

Mitchell: (to Vala) Ladies first.
Vala: (to Daniel) Well then, after you.

Vala: Try playing hard to get.
Mitchell: Eh, look who's talking.

Vala: While I would normally be thrilled to have so much testosterone at my disposal...where’s my Daniel?

Vala: (to General Landry) You’re not going to bore me with your personal life, are you? An hour or two of that might break me...

Vala: I haven't been this disappointed since Daniel and I had sex.

Mitchell: (to Teal'c) Whoa! Whoa! Whoa, man! Bullets bounce!

Mitchell: Wow. Politics really does suck wherever you go.
Teal’c: Indeed.

Vala: I know nothing about your fair planet…other than it seems to have a rather interesting, if somewhat limited gene pool.

Vala: (to Jackson) I had to tell you in…person. I'm pregnant. Pretty sure it's yours, anyway. There's at least a one in… hmm... ten chance!

Mitchell: (referring to the Stargate) Bigger than I expected.

Episode Goofs

Lt. Col. Mitchell was apparently awarded the Medal of Honor, as per one of his flashbacks in the hospital, yet when wearing his dress uniform, the Medal of Honor ribbon does not appear with his other ribbons. (Note: In the US, it's illegal to wear (by people who didn't earn it), or buy the Medal of Honor, or any component of it, so it was probably logistically impossible to get it, even for a TV series, but he should have still had it)

During the briefing, Daniel claims that it was King Henry II who ordered that King Arthur's tomb be exhumed in 1278. However, this order was actually given by his great-grandson, King Edward I. In reality, Henry II died in 1189, two years before the tomb was even discovered.

Cultural References

(As Teal’c leaves his meeting with Mitchell)
Mitchell: Have fun! (then, to no one in particular) Did I mention I’m on a mission from God? Okay, never mind!

Clearly this is a reference to the movie The Blues Brothers. In the movie the two main characters, Jake and Elwood, continually state that they are on a mission from God to save the orphanage they grew up in from being closed due to a lack of funding.

The psychic sergeant
After a couple of exchanges in which Sgt. Walter Harriman seems to anticipate new commander General Hank Landry's requests, Landry refers to Harriman as "psychic." This would seem to be an homage to the relationship between Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly and Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake in M*A*S*H. Perhaps it was suggested by Harriman's first name, Walter, which was also "Radar" O'Reilly's real first name.
