Jor-El, a Kryptonian scientist and Council Member, has uncovered a shocking reality about his planet: in a very short time, it will explode, annihilating everything in a matter of minutes. When he brings his findings before the Council, they rebuke his claims in lieu of the calculations made by Brainiac – Krypton's mega-computer. Jor-El, steadfast in his beliefs, contends that Brainiac is purposefully miscalculating and seeks to uncover the reason why.

| This three-parter was originally aired in an hour and a half prime-time time slot. It was aired with only one opening credits/title sequence, and was simply labeled "Superman The Last Son of Krypton" at the beginning. | Jor-El mentions the Phantom Zone, which we will see and learn more about in "Blasts from the Past, Part I" and "II". | Right after Krypton explodes, you can see a shower of green rocks falling after Kal-El's ship; these rocks will later be known as kryptonite. |

| Brainiac: Good afternoon, Jor-El.
Jor-El: Brainiac! What an unpleasant surprise. | Jor-El: You know, Brainiac, somewhere in all those trillions of files clusters there's got to be one that says "people don't like to be spied on."
Brainiac: Then why would they create me?
Jor-El: (sotto) A question I often ask myself. | Brainiac: Good evening, Jor-El. You've been busy tonight. May I be of service?
Jor-El: Just trying to find out why we disagree, Brainiac.
Brainiac: Human error, I'm afraid.
Jor-El: Funny, I didn't think you were afraid of anything. | Brainiac: This world has seen its last sunrise. | (An earthquake begins)
Guard: Not another one!
Sul-Van: No, the last one. |
| |
| "The Last Son of Krypton"
There is a nice wordplay with the homophones "son" and "sun" on this title and throughout the episode. Brainiac says that Krypton saw its last sunrise, as in "there is no tomorrow for Krypton", so it's the Last Sun of Krypton. On the other hand, Kal-El is Krypton's last son, meaning its last survivor - hence "The Last Son of Krypton." |
