Good God, Y'all! - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Sam and Dean go to see Bobby at the hospital. Their friend is concerned that he may never walk again. While they wait, Dean gets an x-ray of his ribs which reveal the sigil that Castiel carved into his bones. Sam gets a call from Castiel asking where they are. Almost as soon as Sam tells him and hangs up, the angel arrives and explains that the sigils keep all angels, including himself, from finding them. An impatient Bobby tells Castiel to step up and heal him but Castiel explains that since his "death" he has lost much of his Heavenly power.

The angel explains that he has a plan to kill Lucifer. He plans to seek out God and convince him to defeat his opposite number. Dean insists that God is either Dead or unwilling to help, but Castiel warns him to keep his opinions to himself, given that he and Sam failed to stop Lucifer from arriving on Earth. Once Dean shuts up, Castiel says that he needs an amulet that burns in the presence of God to help in his quest. Much to Dean's surprise, Castiel says that his necklace is the one that he needs. Dean hands it over and Castiel disappears.

In the small town of River Pass, Colorado, hunter Rufus Turner is shooting at enemy demons while trying to get a resident out of harm's way. He calls Bobby to tell him that the town is infested with demons and he needs help. Bobby tries to understand what Rufus is saying through poor connection but all he can make out is that he's in River Pass.

Dean and Sam head for River Pass and discover that the only way into town is out. They walk in on foot and find a lot of destruction and several abandoned cars, including a cherry red Mustang. They finally find one person: Ellen Harvelle. She sprays holy water on them to make sure they're not demons and then takes them to a local church sealed with devil's traps. She embraces Dean and then slaps him because he didn't give her a call to let him know what was going on.

Ellen explains that the end times have come and the town is under siege by demons. A few of the surviving townspeople have taken refuge in the church, including the pastor, an ex-soldier named Austin, a pregnant girl, and a nervous businessman, Roger. Ellen explains that Rufus came to town following demon omens and the demons attacked. Ellen has been hunting with Jo, her daughter. They became separated and Ellen has been trying to find Jo. When Dean wonders why they haven't left town, Ellen explains that the demons picked off several of them the last time they tried.

Dean and Sam try to come up with a plan and Sam wants to go out and get salt and weapons. Dean agrees but suggests that he go alone while Sam stays behind to show the townspeople to use the guns. Sam realizes that Dean still doesn't trust him but insists on going anyway. They take to the streets and Sam insists that they separate to complete their tasks faster. Dean is reluctant to let Sam out of his sight but finally agrees. Sam goes into the grocery store to get the salt and two possessed teenagers come in. When Sam tries to reach his shotgun, one of them comes after him. He tries to exorcise it and fails and is forced to stab it with the demon-killing knife. The other demon comes after him and Sam stabs and kills it as well. As he stares at the blood, Dean comes in to find him looking hungrily at the fluid.

Sam and Dean get back to the church and start training the townspeople. Austin notices Dean expertly checking his gun and figures he's a fellow soldier. Dean avoids his questions and talks to Sam, who is shocked at having to kill the two possessed teenagers. Sam admits that he misses having the power to drive demons from their host bodies, but Dean points out that he had to drink demon blood to do it. Ellen decides to go find Jo and Sam insists on going. Dean tries to tell him it's a bad idea and Sam hasn't learned his lesson. Sam snaps, shoving him against the wall, and then controls himself.

Sam and Ellen search the town and she asks what's going on between the brothers. Sam lies and says it's stress, and then directs the conversation back to Jo. Ellen still believes that Jo isn't up to hunting but realized that she wasn't going to stop, so she decided to accompany her daughter. They spot a house with smoke coming from the chimney and go to investigate. There are demons inside but Sam wonders why demons would need a fire. Jo and another possessed human suddenly attack them. Jo calls Ellen a "black-eyed bitch" as she struggles with her. Ellen manages to escape but someone knocks out Sam from behind. As he loses consciousness, Sam realizes that his attacker is a black-eyed Rufus.

Later, the possessed Rufus and Jo wake Sam up and start beating him. They have put him in a Devil's Trap and spray him with holy water. When nothing happens, they pour salt in Sam's mouth and perform an exorcism ritual.

Ellen returns to the church and tells Dean that Sam's been captured. Dean figures that they need some kind of plan.

Sam watches as Rufus and Jo wonder why they haven't been able to drive the demon out of him, and he realizes that they think he's possessed. At the same time, he's seeing them as demon-possessed. Finally, he spots Roger, hiding in a doorway and twisting at his ring.

Ellen tries to figure out why Jo thought she was demon possessed, and how a demon possessed her despite the protective amulet she was wearing. Dean admits he doesn't have any ideas and normally would call Bobby. He asks Ellen what Rufus was doing in town and she tells him that Rufus was checking contaminated water. The priest and Austin confirm that the river recently became polluted. At the same time, a shooting star passed overhead. Dean checks a Bible and realizes that the river and the star are precursors of the Apocalypse. The omens signify the coming of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Dean realizes that War rides a red horse, and that the cherry-red Mustang is the Horseman's modern-day steed. They realize that War is responsible, making everyone see each other as demons to provoke endless conflict.

At the other house, Roger waits until Rufus and Jo leave. He then confronts Sam, who has realized that he is War. Sam says that he'll kill him but War points out that Sam wants to kill and taste blood, and that he wants to be stronger than everyone. The Horseman is glad to have Sam on his side, feeling the desire for murder and killing. When Sam threatens to reveal his plan, War twists his ring, reinforcing the hallucination for Rufus and Jo. He then kicks over a chair and cuts his head. The others come in and Roger says that the possessed Sam is responsible. Rufus attacks Sam, who is unable to get through to him.

Roger goes back to the church and tells that group that he overheard the demons planning to pick them off one at a time. He urges everyone to attack the "demons" but Dean realizes it's a trick. War realizes he's been caught out and uses his ring, causing the townspeople to see Ellen and Dean as demons. They quickly run out as Austin and the pastor open fire on them.

At the house, Rufus rigs the windows with explosives. Jo worries that they could kill her mother before they drive the demon out, and Rufus says he'll do whatever he can. Jo isn't happy but hands over another bomb. They retreat further into the house with their group of survivors and one of the window bombs goes off. Rufus and Jo check it out and Dean yanks Rufus through the window while Ellen grabs Jo. Dean and Rufus struggle and Dean tries to remind the hunter that he came to River Pass to investigate the omens. Rufus finally manages to overcome the hallucination. Ellen does the same with her daughter and they free Sam. Austin's group opens fire on Rufus and Jo's survivors in the house. Dean and Sam go to find War, and Sam explains that he saw the Horseman use his ring

Rufus tries to stop the shooters in the house but one of them shoots the pastor. Ellen goes to the pastor's aid but Austin prepares to shoot her. He discovers he's out of bullets and goes after Ellen with a knife.

His job finished, War goes back to his Mustang. Dean grabs him and Sam uses the demon-killing knife to cut off his finger and the ring drops to the ground. The hallucinations end and Austin stops just short of killing Ellen, while War disappears.

Later, Dean and Sam wonder what to do with the ring. Sam admits to Dean that he doesn't trust himself either and admits he likes the rush of power. He agrees that he has to step back before he endanger Dean. Dean agrees, saying that he's too worried about Sam to concentrate on hunting. Dean offers Sam the Impala, but he refuses and hitches a ride out of town.
