In Kansas City, Dean brushes past a Jehovah's Witness handing out religious tracts and checks into a hotel. He calls Castiel to see if he's had any luck finding the Colt. Castiel has discovered the demons are keeping it for some reason rather than melting it down and warns Dean it's the only thing that can possibly kill Lucifer. When Castiel prepares to teleport to Dean to hunt the Cold, Dean tells him that he needs a few hours to sleep and eat and that they'll meet at the designated time the next morning.
Dean is trying to sleep when Sam calls to tell him that he's learned he's Lucifer's chosen vessel. Dean wonders what his brother wants to do about it and Sam explains that he wants to partner up again so he can redeem himself. Dean thinks that it's pointless and that they're better off staying away from each other because the demons will use one of them against the other. Dean hangs up and goes back to sleep.
Dean wakes up in the morning and discovers that the hotel is now a ruin. He looks out the window and sees that the city is a devastated landscape as far as he can see. He goes out on the streets and finds no one there. Looking around, he finally finds a little girl crouched on the street. When he talks to her, she grabs a piece of glass and stabs him. Dean is forced to knock her out but sees the world "Croatoan" written on the wall. As he realizes, a group of zombie-like humans attack him. Dean runs away but his escape is cut off by a fence. The zombies move in but a group of soldiers attack and kill the monsters.
That night, Dean escapes through the quarantine fence and finds a sign saying the area is contaminate by the Croatoan virus. The date is August 1, 2014, five years in the future. Dean steals a car but is unable to call anyone or get a radio station. Zachariah appears in the car next to him and explains that the angels used human informants among the fringe Christian groups to find Dean. Zachariah explains that he's brought Dean to the future brought on by his decision to refuse to let Michael use his body as a vessel to defeat Lucifer. Zachariah says that Dean will be trapped in the future for three days and teleports away.
Dean goes to Bobby's house first but finds nothing but a wheelchair covered in blood and bullet holes. He checks his friend's journal and finds a photo of Bobby with a hunter group at Camp Chitaqua. He drives there and tries to sneak in, and finds the Impala, long abandoned. Someone knocks him out from behind: his future self. Dean wakes up and Future Dean demands to know who he is and why he's carrying all the same escape equipment that he does. Dean finally proves who he is by telling his future self that one of their girlfriends made them try on her panties and they liked it. Dean accepts his story and explains that two years ago there was an outbreak of the Croatoan virus. Sam is gone, destroyed by Satan during a battle in Detroit. Future Dean wasn't there for his brother. Future Dean locks up his past self so that they don't confuse the survivors gathered at the camp.
Dean eventually frees himself and goes outside. He runs into Chuck Shurley, who thinks he's Future Dean and talks to him about their supplies. Dean tries to bluff his way through but is interrupted when Risa, one of the female survivors, attacks him and demands to know who he was sleeping with the previous night. Dean convinces her he's Future Dean and goes looking for Castiel. Chuck directs him to a cabin where Castiel is organizing an orgy and passing himself off as a love guru. Castiel realizes that Dean is from the past but explains that he lost much of his angelic power and now spends most of his time stoned.
Future Dean returns with several survivors. As Dean watches, Future Dean casually shoots one of them down. When Dean tries to stop him, Future Dean convinces the survivors that he knows what's going on and there's a reason there's a second Dean. He then talks to Dean in private and explains that the dead man was infected and he did him a favor by killing him now. Future Dean says that it's his future and Dean has no idea what's going on. Dean apologizes and Future Dean explains that the dead man was infected during their mission to find the Colt. Future Dean has it now after five years and he plans to use it to kill Lucifer.
Future Dean briefs Dean, Castiel, and Risa on his plan. He explains that he captured and tortured one of Lucifier's minions, much to Dean's dismay. Future Dean shows them where Lucifer is and the others agree to help kill Lucifer. Castiel wonders why they're taking Dean. However, Future Dean doesn't explain. However, once the others are gone, Dean asks for an explanation. Future Dean explains that Sam didn't die: he was destroyed when he agreed to let Lucifer use him as a vessel. Future Dean tells Dean to agree to accept Michael and admits that he'd do it now, but the angels have left and no one is there to here him agree. He begs Dean to do it but realizes that his past self will do the exact same thing that he did, and that history can't be changed.
As they drive to Lucifer's headquarters, Castiel starts taking amphetamines and admits that he lost his angelic mojo after the other angels left earth. Now he's fully embraced a human existence and plans to enjoy himself before the planet is destroyed.
The team arrives at the sanitarium where Lucifer is lurking. Future Dean tells the others that the demons don't know that they're there and sends the others ahead. Dean realizes that he's lying and threatens to tell the others. Future Dean finally admits that he knows that the entire place is a trap set by Lucifer. The others will draw their fire while he sneaks in and uses the Colt to kill Lucifer. Dean objects and Future Dean knocks him out.
Dean wakes up when he hears gunfire inside the sanitarium. He goes in and finds Future Dean lying on the ground. Lucifer is there, occupying Sam's body, and casually snaps Future Dean's neck. When Dean wonders if Lucifer is going to kill him, Lucifer points out that there's no point. He apologizes for having to use Sam's body but admits that there was no other option. Now he plans to wipe out the humans, but leave the wonders of God's creation standing. He explains that he rebelled against God when the Almighty asked his angels to bow down before the humans and love them more than Him. Lucifer refused, insisting the humans were murderous apes that would rather kill each other. Lucifer hopes that Dean will understand, but Dean insists that Lucifer is just one more monster like all the ones that he's killed over the years. The only difference is that Lucifer has a bigger ego. Lucifer just smiles and admits that he likes Dean, and says that Dean has no choice. Dean will refuse to accept Michael, Sam will say yes to Lucifer, and the future that Dean has seen will come true in five years.
Dean finds himself back in the present as Zachariah returns him to his hotel room. When Dean wonders if the entire thing was an illusion, Zachariah insists that it was real and Dean must accept Michael before Sam is corrupted and billions of humans die. Dean refuses and Zachariah prepares to destroy him now that he knows where he is. Dean suddenly disappears: Castiel teleports him to the road where he's been waiting for their appointment. Dean calls Sam and sets up a meeting.
The next day, Sam meets with his brother, who gives him the demon-killing knife. Dean says that he'll need it now that they're going to team up again. He apologizes and admits that no matter that the demons can use one to threaten the other, they're all that they have. Sam promises not to let him down and Dean explains that they'll have to make their own future.
