Sam and Dean receive a text message from
Supernatural author Chuck Shurley, who asks them to come to the Pineview Hotel. They arrive and spot Chuck, but he says he didn't text them and has no idea why they are there. However, he quickly realizes that someone took his cell phone: Becky, Sam and Dean's biggest fan. She finds them and insists they need to come into the hotel and see what's going on. Chuck apologizes in advance and the brothers discover that the hotel is hosting the world's first
Supernatural convention. Fans of the series are dressed up as their favorite characters, including plenty of Sam and Dean lookalikes.
Chuck talks to the crowd and ends up telling them that a Scandinavian investor is financing new books in the series. Afterward, Chuck brings Becky a drink and tries to get her attention, but she only has eyes for Sam. Dean and Sam talk to Chuck in private and tell him that with the Apocalypse coming, they have more important things to do. Chuck admits that he needs to make a living until the end of the world, and the only thing he can do is turn his visions into books. They hear a scream and discover convention goers talking with a hotel maid. However, she starts to tell a story about the ghosts in the hotel and they realize the "maid" is an actress. Becky explains that a live-action role-playing (LARP) is going on at the hotel and the winner gets a $50 Sizzler gift certificate.
The brothers briefly listen in as the convention manager gets into his role of hotel manager and tells the Sam and Dean lookalikes that a hundred years ago, the place was an orphanage and Latisha Gore killed four boys. Dean and Sam go for a drink while Alex, a Sam lookalike, finds the actress playing Latisha. He "shoots" her and goes to get his friend Tim. However, a real ghostly boy appears and asks Alex for help. Alex runs away in terror until he realizes what happened and says that it's cool. However, the real Latisha appears and attack shim briefly before vanishing.
Dean meets the actress at the bar and flirts with her. He overhears Alex talking to Tim about what the saw. Dean figures the fan saw something real and he and Sam go to talk to the hotel manager. They bribe him to explain that the convention committee chose the hotel because there really was an orphanage on the site a hundred years ago and the place is reputed to be haunted. A Sam and Dean duo hear the real Sam and Dean talking and watch them go up to the attic where actual sightings have gone. Afterward the two fans search the hotel and spot another ghost boy. They ask him where Latisha is and he points to a painting and then disappears. The duo checks the painting and discovers a map of the ground hidden inside. Impressed at the game's authenticity, they figure they can win.
Sam and Dean find another ghost boy in the attic. He's been scalped and insists that his mother loves him, The brothers go downstairs and Sam tries to deal with Becky, who is ignoring Chuck to flirt with him. Sam calls the historical society and confirms that Latisha killed her own son along with three other orphan boys. They overhear "Dean" and "Sam" examining the map and find a cemetery, and figure that it's real. The players refuse to give up the map and Dean prepares to shoot them, but Sam manages to convince them to share as long as the fans get the gift card. "Sam" and "Dean" agree as long as Sam and Dean play Bobby and Rufus.
As they go to the cemetery, "Sam" and "Dean" argue about their "father" and Dean takes offense, telling them that Sam and Dean have miserable lives that would drive most people insane. "Sam" and "Dean" point out that they're just stories, and Sam explains that Dean is really into the game.
The team finds the tombs at the cemetery and Dean and Sam start digging up Latisha graves. "Sam" and "Dean" are disgusted, but Dean convinces them they need to play to win. The wind picks up and Dean gets the coffin open, and the two fans realize that it's no game. Latisha's ghost appears, knocks down Sam, and attacks the two fans as they try to run. Dean salts and burns her bones, destroying her once and for all.
Back at the hotel, "Sam" and "Dean" drink heavily now that they know ghosts are real. Dean buys them a drink and the brothers say one final disgusted goodbye to Chuck. However, they discover that all exits out of the hotel are locked. They hear a scream and find the actress running away in terror. The brothers discover she saw the ghost of Latisha's son, who asks them why they sent his mother away for good. He warns them that his mother didn't kill him and vanishes.
A fan is walking down the hallway when the other three ghost boys appear to him. They say that now they can have fun and attack him. Dean and Sam hear him scream and discover that he's dead, scalped.
Chuck is ending the convention with his final speech when Sam gets on stage and tells him what's going on. He tells Chuck to stall as long as possible. Sam and Dean bring in the hotel staff and salt the doors, and then try to figure things out. They conclude that the three boys scalped Latisha's son, and the boy's mother went berserk and killed them and then herself. Her ghost was the only thing restraining them all these years. Dean realizes they need to salt and burn the bones of the boys, but Sam points out they can't get out of the hotel and they left all their weapons in the Impala. They need a distraction to get out, and Dean realizes that the actress can help them. They convince her to help and "Dean" and "Sam" overhear them talking and offer to help. When Dean wonders why, the fans admit that it's what Sam and Dean would do.
The actress pretends to be Latisha and summons the boys, and then tells them to open the doors this instance. Sam and the two fans try to get out while Dean keeps an eye on the actress. "Dean" and "Sam" manage to get out but the actress' cell phone rings and the boys realize that she's a fake. Dean gets her out and fights off the ghosts and Sam comes to drive them off.
"Sam" and "Dean" get to the cemetery and start digging. Meanwhile, the hotel manager finally is bored with Chuck's stalling efforts and leaves, breaking the salt line. One of the ghost boys appear but a heroic Chuck drives it off with a mike stand, much to the amazement and arousal of Becky.
Outside, the two fans try to get their cigarette lighter started. Inside, the ghost boys overwhelm Sam and Dean. They grab the brothers and prepare to scalp them... and disappear, as the fans burn the bones.
The next day, the police clean up and Dean congratulates "Sam" and "Dean." He finally gets their names, Damien and Barnes. They ask who he is but when he gives them his name, figures that he's joking. Dean plays along and Damien tells him that he's wrong: the Winchester brothers' story is so great to them because they have normal everyday lives, and that anyone would want to have a brother willing to die for them. Dean admits that he might be right and suggests that they make a good team. Damien and Barnes explain that they're already partners and hold hands as they watch Dean go.
Becky apologizes to Sam for finding a new love of her life. Sam manfully admits that he'll try to soldier on without her. As he starts to go, Becky tells him that she's learned something important from the
Supernatural books. Instead of Bella giving the Colt to Lilith, she gave it to Lilith's minion and lover, Crowley. Sam heads for the Impala where Dean is waiting. Dean admits that he's actually feeling pretty good about himself and they head out to find the Colt.
Meanwhile, Chuck ends the convention by talking about his life, and admits that it's not jumping the shark if you never come down.
