My Bloody Valentine - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Russell and Alice are on their first date and have a good time. Russell asks her to go on another date on Valentine Day so he won't be alone. They start to kiss, shyly at first and then more fervently. They go inside and start ripping off each other's clothes, and then Alice bites Russell on the neck. When she withdraws in shock, Russell tells her that it's okay. She bits him and he bites her, and they start ripping off pieces of each other and swallowing them.

The brothers arrive in town to investigate and Sam talks to Alice's roommate. She says that she found Russell, who was barely alive when she found them and was still chewing. Alice was a virgin and it was her first date in years. Afterward, Sam meets with Dean at the motel and tells him that he didn’t find any supernatural traces at the scene. Dean has checked with the coroner, Dr. Corman, and confirmed that both victims gorged themselves on each other. Sam tells Dean that he'll see him later, and Dean has no idea what he's talking about. Sam points out that Dean always hits the bars to celebrate Valentine Day, but Dean says he isn't interested this year. When Sam wonders what's going on, Dean insists that there's nothing wrong.

At an office, Jim and his co-worker Brad are talking. Brad accuses Jim of being pussy-whipped by his girlfriend, Janice. He wants Jim to focus on his work. Janice, upset, comes in and demands that Jim choose her over his work. When Brad tries to interrupt, Janice shoots him with her gun. Jim runs to her side and tells her that something will always keep them apart, but he has a way for them to stay together. Two shots ring out.

Later, Sam and Dean go to the morgue and talk with Dr. Corman. Sam notices a tall balding man in a black suit and notices something unusual about him. He dismisses it and they meet with Dr. Corman. He tells them they're free to check the organs he's removed and leaves. As they go over the organs, Sam spots an identical mark on each victim's heart, and it's an Enochian brand like the ones they have. Dean calls Castiel, who teleports in and explains that the marks are Enochian. They signify a destined union and are placed by Cupid. In this case, Cupid isn't one angel, but one of many similar cherubs, a lower order of angels. Castiel warns that there must be a rogue Cupid and they have to find and stop it from killing anyone else.

The trio stake out a singles bar and Castiel takes a sudden interest in Dean's hamburger. He takes it and start eating while explaining that Cupid will be drawn there by the humans' reproductive urges. When a couple suddenly starts kissing, Castiel realizes that Cupid is there. He tells the Winchesters to meet him in the back alley and then teleports away. Outside, Castiel tethers the cherub and causes it to manifest. It appears as an overly enthusiastic naked man who wants to hug all of them. Once he does so, Cupid breaks into tears when they realize they're accusing him of killing his "victims." He explains that he loves love, and he would never harm them. Castiel reads his mind and confirms that he's innocent. When the Cupid says that he's just following orders, Dean wonders who gave him his orders. Cupid says that his orders come from Heaven, and that some of his targets warrant divine intervention. John and Mary Winchester were another match literally made in Heaven. Dean angrily tries to punch him but just hurts his hand. Cupid teleports away, his feelings hurt, and Sam wonders what Dean's problem is. Dean doesn't want to talk about it.

Corman calls the brother back to the morgue and shows them another dead man. This victim had formerly been overweight, and had surgery to help him lose weight. However, he then ate himself to death with Twinkies, shoving them down his throat with a toilet brush. They check his heart and discover it doesn't have an Enochian brand. They check and confirm that there have been record numbers of ODs and suicides, and that whatever is going on has nothing to do with Cupid. As Sam watches the hospital, he sees the black-suited man emerge with a briefcase. He goes after the guy and stabs him with the demon-killing knife, confirming he's a demon vessel. The demon manages to escape, leaving his briefcase behind. Sam stares avidly at the blade and the blood on it, but finally manages to wipe it off.

Back at the hotel, Sam and Dean open the briefcase and discover it's filled with a bright light. Castiel arrive, holding a bag of White Castle hamburgers, and confirms that it's the soul of the man who ate himself to death. As Castiel starts eating, he explains that his own hunger is a clue. The entire town is suffering from starvation: for drugs, for love, for food, for sex. Famine, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, are responsible. When they wonder why Castiel is affected, the angel admits that his human host body, Jimmy, has an appetite for red meat.

Lucifer's demon minions take Famine, an elderly man riding in a black car, to a restaurant. The patrons go berserk, kissing, taking drugs, and reaching into the deep-fat fryers to feed themselves.

Castiel explains to the brothers that Famine devours the souls of his victims, and the demon was delivering the dead man's soul to the Horseman. Lucifer's demons will tend to Famine until he has fed enough to regain his strength and travel across the world, spreading starvation in his path.

At the restaurant, the black-suited demon arrives and warns Famine that Sam is at the hospital, and that he grabbed Sam's motel key when they struggle. Famine demands the captured soul and when the demon admits he lost it, the Horseman sucks the demon out of the vessel and consumes it.

At the motel, Castiel is unable to stop eating. Sam tries to get control of himself but finally warns the others that he can't control his own hunger… for demon blood. It's too late to get Sam away, and Sam asks them to handcuff him to the sink while they deal with Famine. Dean reluctant agrees. He and Castiel go to the hospital and learn that Corman is dead: an ex-alcoholic, he drank himself to death. Castiel confirms that Corman's soul is still there and the duo set up outside the hospital and wait for a demon to come and collect the soul. As they wait, Castiel wonders why Dean seems unaffected. Dean claims that he already sates all of his appetites when ever they arise, so he doesn't suffer from starvation. A demon emerges with the soul and they follow it to the restaurant.

At the motel, a desperate Sam tries to break free without success. Two demons come to get him, figuring they can torture him a little without harming Lucifer's vessel permanently. When one of them unlocks the handcuffs, Sam attacks him and then drinks the other demon's blood. When the first demon tries to stop him, Sam regains his powers and shoves the demon away.

Outside the restaurant, Dean figures that Castiel can teleport in with the knife, cut off Famine's finger with the knife, teleport out, and stop the Horseman. Castiel disappears and Dean waits for a minute, When the angel doesn't return, Dean realizes that something has gone wrong. He sneaks inside and finds Castiel, mindlessly eating raw hamburger off of the floor. The demons subdue Dean and drag him before Famine, who boasts that America is the perfect feeding ground because everybody already wants more. When Dean notes that he's unaffected Famine examines him closely and explains that there is a gaping void in Dean's soul, and nothing he can do will fill it. He's only going through the motions of fighting evil, believing deep down that he can't win.

Sam storms in and Famine tells his demon escort to back off. The Horseman explains that he sent the two demons as a snack and that he is unique in that he'll never die from overdrinking demon blood. Famine invites Sam to eat the demon escort, but when Sam refuses, the Horseman draws out their souls and consumes them himself. Sam tries to use his powers on Famine, but the Horseman warns that he's too powerful. Realizing he can't affect Famine directly, Sam uses his power to draw the demons out of Famine, causing the Horseman to collapse. Dean stares at his blood-covered brother in horror.

Later, Dean and Castiel take Sam to Bobby's panic room and lock him in so he can go cold turkey and overcome his addiction. Den walks out into the junkyard with a bottle of booze, but sets it aside and looks up to the sky, and says that he needs someone to help him.
