Hammer of the Gods - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In Muncie, Indiana, a security guard stops off at the old, abandoned Elysian Fields Hotel. As he checks out the place, he hears a noise and goes to investigate, unaware that dead flowers in a potted plant are regrowing. He finally turns and comes face to face with an elegant man in a suit. The man informs him that they all have a part to play for when everyone arrives, and the security guard will be serving as dinner.

Some time later, a storm strikes the area and Dean and Sam pull into the Elysian Fields Hotel. It's now an elegant four-star hotel. The man in the suit, working as the desk clerk, checks them in and types quickly on the computer. He notices that Dean has a shaving cut on his neck and provides a handkerchief, gives them their key, and directs them to the all-you-can eat buffet. Dean quickly grabs a plate and hits on an attractive Hindu woman. She tells him "no" before he can say anything. At the table, Sam insists that they should hit the road but Dean tells him to relax before he burns out from lack of sleep. Meanwhile, chefs in the kitchen prepare a man's severed arm.

As they go to their room, the Winchesters pass a young honeymoon couple who can't keep their hands off each other. In their room, the brothers find four-star accommodations and an on-demand porno movie. Sam wonders why there's a four-star highway in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly the wall adjoining the honeymoon couple's room shakes violently. Sam and Dean investigate but the room is empty and all they find is a wedding room. They show it to the desk clerk, who says that the couple checked out and he'll put the ring in lost and found.

Convinced that the clerk is acting suspiciously, Dean searches the place while Sam follows the clerk. He vanishes and Sam suddenly notices a cut on his neck. Meanwhile, Dean is scanning the hotel and passes an elephant in a hotel room. When he realizes what's going on, he walks back but there's only a man out of the shower.

The Hindu woman is in her room with an attractive man when the desk clerk comes in. he tells them that the last guest has arrived, the pantry is full, everything is ready, and the Winchesters are under their control. He moves at superspeed and gives the woman the Winchester's blood, and she calls him Mercury.

Sam and Dean go to the lobby and discover that the guests have vanished. They realized they've been trapped and go to the kitchen, where they discover a soup pot full of human eyeballs. The guests are locked in the freezer and two men arrive to capture the brothers and take them to the ballroom. A number of special guests are present, wearing name badges of the ancient gods: Ganesh, Odin, Kali, Baron Samedi, and more. Mercury arrives with the main course: the security guard's head. Kali's male friend, Baldur, informs everyone that their guests of honor have arrived.

Everyone gathers at the tables and Baldur explains that they have to behave and keep a low profile. They are there to set aside their disagreements and unite to stop the Judeo-Christian Apocalypse. The gods argue about what to do with the vessels of Michael and Lucifer. When the brothers try to sneak away, Kali stops them and warns that the angels only understand violence. Mercury protests, suggesting a diplomatic approach, and Kali causes him to cough up blood. Balder finally convinces her to stop. Gabriel suddenly bursts into the room and the pagan gods recognize him as Loki. He tells the gods that they can't stop the Apocalypse, and then teleports Sam and Dean back to their room.

The brothers try to figure out what to do next, and they figure they need to get the human prisoners out. Gabriel appears and explains that he's there to help them, and Dean points out that Gabriel was telling them to accept their roles. He denies caring about humanity, and claims that he and Kali were close. Sam wonders if the gods have a chance, but Gabriel warns that Lucifer will easily destroy them. He also tells them that Kali has placed a blood spell on them and they can't leave. Dean wants to rescue the humans but Gabriel warns it's too dangerous. Dean blackmails by threatening to reveal he's an angel, not Loki, and Gabriel gives in.

Gabriel goes to see Kali in her room, but she isn't impressed. Meanwhile, Dean and Sam can only watch from hiding as the gods kill one of the human guests for food.

Gabriel suggests they run rather than losing a fight. She would rather fight, and he seems to accept that. She the grabs him and they kiss.

In the kitchen, the Chinese god Zao Jun attacks the brothers. Dean stabs him through the heart. Meanwhile, Kali gets a sample of Gabriel's blood and says that now he's trapped as well.

Back in the ballroom, Kali informs Gabriel that she knows who he is. She removes a hidden weapon from his jacket, the Archangel's Blade of Gabriel. Gabriel admits that he's an angel, but he's a runaway from Heaven and he wants to save them all. Kali dismisses his concerns as arrogance, and informs Gabriel that she will destroy the Earth if anyone does. She then stabs him in the chest with his own blade, killing him.

Dean gets up, pours himself a drink, and tells the gods that they have to put aside their differences, mortal and god alike, and bring down Lucifer. He says they can get Lucifer there, but the gods have to release the human prisoners. The gods agree and Dean gets the humans out. He finds Gabriel hiding in the Impala. The angel explains he used his illusion powers to fake his own death by providing a fake sword. He figures Kali likes Dean and he should get close to her and recover their blood so they can leave. In response, Dean wants him to help in the fight. He figures Gabriel's arrogance is an act, and that the gods are the only freedom he has. If Gabriel doesn't help them, they'll die. Gabriel insists that he can't kill his brother, and Dean asks if he can or won't.

Inside, Sam explains the plan to erase the sigils on his ribs, protecting him from detection. Dean arrives and tells them that Gabriel has deceived them.

A rotting Lucifer arrives at the front desk and meets with Mercury, who is expecting him. Mercury is concerned that the other pagan gods have gone crazy. Lucifer says that the pagan gods are worse than humans and demons, and then snaps his neck with a gesture.

As the lights flicker, Baldur and Kali realize that things have gone wrong. In the hallway outside, Lucifer easily smashes down the other gods and walks over their corpses to enter the ballroom. Baldur admits they can't teleport away because Lucifer has sealed them in. Lucifer arrives and Baldur goes to confront him. Lucifer slams his hand through the god's chest. Furious, Kali summons flames while Dean and Sam duck behind a table. Lucifer is unaffected and knocks Kali down. Behind the table, Gabriel appears and gives Dean the porn DVD, and then knocks Lucifer back before he can destroy Kali. He draws his blade and tells Sam and Dean to get Kali away.

Lucifer can't understand how Gabriel could be slumming. In response, Gabriel chastises him for hating God because he chose humans over angels, and that humans are the ones that deserve Gabriel's loyalty. He explains that God was right and the humans are better than them. Lucifer suddenly turns and grabs the real Gabriel behind him as he plans to stab him, and stabs the blade into his heart. Gabriel dies for real in a burst of light as Lucifer looks down sorrowfully at his little brother.

Out on the road, Dean and Sam plays the porno DVD on their laptop. Gabriel is the porn actor, and he gives them a pre-recorded message. In the message, he explains that they have no chance of killing Lucifer without him. However, the cage that contained Lucifer once can contain him again. They just have to trick Lucifer back into it while avoiding the angels. Gabriel tells them that there are four keys to the cage: the rings of the Four Horsemen. He admits that he was afraid to stand up to Lucifer, but not any more. The brothers have two rings, and need the rings of Death and Pestilence.

A store clerk is working when Pestilence comes in, coughing and wheezing, and sneezing on all the merchandise. He buys a case of flu medicine as flies swarm all over the store. Pestilence says that he has a long way to drive and then goes on his way as the flies gather in a thick cloud within the car.
