In a cornfield near Elwood, Indiana, a teenage couple are making out. The boy, Patrick Brennan hears something in the cornfield and decides to investigate despite his girlfriend's objections. She reluctantly goes after him but they're separated. Patrick is suddenly enveloped in a beam of light and disappears. His girlfriend arrives and discovers that the cornfield has been carved out in a giant series of circles.
UFO aficionados, including expert Wayne Whittaker, come to Elwood when news of Patrick's disappearance and three others in the area is announced. Dean and Sam show up in town, and end up talking to a woman who thinks that fairies are responsible. Sam insults her, and Dean hauls him away. He insists that Sam would have shown empathy, and Sam points out that he doesn't have a soul. Dean tries to get him to care about something, but Sam doesn't see the point. His brother tells him to fake it, and follow his cues.
The brothers go to see Mr. Brennan, Patrick's father and a watchmaker, who isn't interested in talking and insists they can't help him. Sam wonders why he's so sure, and figures that Brennan knows something. Dean restrains his brother, and Brennan admits that it's been weeks and things look hopeless. Once they leave, Brennan addresses an invisible presence and asks if it's okay. A watch hanging from clamps spins of its own volition.
Outside, Sam and Dean figure that Brennan is hiding something, and Dean goes to check out the crop circles. He tells Sam to watch Brennan, but to not do anything without calling him first.
That night, Dean investigates the crop circles where Patrick disappeared. Sam calls to report that Brennan has gone to a bar, and Dean hears something. A beam of light sweeps across the field toward Dean, who runs. Sam expresses mild concern over the phenomenon, as Dean draws his knife and gun... and is teleported away. Sam shrugs and orders a beer.
Sam goes out to the cornfield to look around, and finds his brother's phone where he dropped it. He notices a camp of UFO enthusiasts nearby and goes to check it out. He finds Whittaker and asks about his research, but dismisses it as flimsy and undocumented. A hippy girl, Sparrow Jennings, comes over and is sympathetic toward Sam when she hears that Dean was abducted. Sam stalks off and Sparrow goes after him, and offers to help.
Dean reappears in the cornfield, firing shots. He walks to town and goes to the motel, and finds Sam in bed with Sparrow. Dean has her pack up and leave, and then wants to know why Sam abandoned the search for him after an hour. They realize that Dean has suffered from a UFO time-slip, and Sam gets Dean to describe how he was teleported into a white light. The aliens then took Dean to a probing table, and he fought back. They were surprised, and sent Dean back to the cornfield.
The next day, the brothers get breakfast and Dean wonders what else might be real if aliens exist. Sam is busy flirting with the waitress, and Dean explains that he should suffer from Dean's loss, even if there's nothing he could do. Sam doesn't understand what the point of is suffering is. As they start to leave to do research, Dean notices a man in a red cap standing outside the window, watching him intently. Sam doesn't see him, and when Dean turns back, the man disappears.
Dean goes back to the motel to do research on the Internet, while Sam goes to the library. After Sam checks in, the room lights fade. A bright light shines through the window and the door slams open... and a small glowing figure flies in. Dean goes for his gun but it gets between him and the weapon, and then punches him. After a struggle, Dean lures it into the microwave and turns it on, and the creature explodes.
When Sam arrives, Dean is surprised to learn that he doesn't see any of the creature's remains in the microwave. He reluctantly explains that the thing that attacked him was a little naked lady. When Sam hears the description and confirms that it has wings, he realizes that the "aliens" are actually fairies. He figures that people that encountered fairies now consider them aliens. Sam figures it's a lead, and they go to see Marion at her trailer. She serves tea and cookies, and explains that trolls, goblins, and elves are all mischievous beings from the fairy realm. Only people who have been there and returned can see fairies in the real world. Marion confirms that the fairies only take first-born sons. Dean gets her to explain that fairies like cream, and are hurt by silver and cold iron. Finally, fairies are compelled to count any grains spilled in front of them. They try to leave, but Marion insists that they finish their tea.
Outside, they wonder what to do, and notice Brennan buying cream in bulk from the grocery store. Dean breaks into the store while Sam watches Brennan. Inside the store, Dean finds... fairies, hard at work building watches and drinking cream. He hastily retreats before they can notice him, and calls Sam. Sam is at the bar watching Brennan drink, and Dean calls to tell him what he saw. Once he's heard the full story, Sam goes over to Brennan, talks about the watches, and suggests that he has elves working for him. Sam demands to know how Brennan could trade his son for watches,
Outside, Dean sees the redcap following him.
Brennan explains that he suffers from Parkinson's, and that his grandmother taught him about fairy lore when he was young. She left him a book which he used to perform a ceremony and summon a leprechaun. The leprechaun offered to bring in workers to save Brennan's business, in return for his agreement to give them "food and the fat of the land." Too late, Brennan realized that the fairies want first-born children, and they're not going to stop. The spell book with the banishment spell is in a safe at his shop, but the fairies won't let him get to it.
Dean tries to get away from the redcap and ducks into an alley. When a short figure walks by the mouth of the alley, Dean leaps at it and screams that it's a fairy, only to discover that it's a short lawyer. A crowd gathers and Dean tries to claim he was kidding.
Brennan and Sam leave the bar and discover that the sheriff is taking Dean to jail. Dean tries to explain but the sheriff figures it was a hate crime against homosexuals, The sheriff warns that Dean's victim was the county district attorney, and that he's pressing charges.
Sam and Brennan enter the shop, and Brennan confirms that the elves drunk on crime and oblivious to the world. They get to the safe and Brennan begins to cast the spell, but the leprechaun rams his cane through Brennan's chest. The leprechaun is Whittaker, who explains that Brennan broke his deal and they come to stay. Sam realizes that the fairies take the first-born and send them back, and their ramblings make people think the fairies are aliens. Whittaker is unconcerned since Sam is the only person left who can stop them. He turns invisible, but Sam warns that he has very good reflexes and the leprechaun will have to get close to him eventually. The leprechaun realizes that Sam is missing his soul. Whittaker offers to return Sam's soul, and explains that his power stems from real magic, from the realm of the fairy. Dean considers for a moment, and then shoots him with iron buckshot. Whittaker is wounded, but turns invisible again before Sam can kill him.
The redcap appears in Dean's cell and attacks him.
Whittaker attacks Sam and takes away his iron knife, and then beats him with his cane.
Dean tries to attack the redcap, which easily teleports out of the way.
Sam gives up trying to fight back, takes out some salt, and spills it on the floor. Whittaker is compelled to count the grains, giving Sam enough time to cast the spell and send all of the fairies back to their home dimension.
Later, the brothers toast the D.A., who dropped the charges. Dean asks Sam why he didn't agree to the leprechaun's deal. Sam points out that it was a deal, and they haven't had good luck with deals. When Dean admits he doesn't understand how Sam thinks now that he lacks a soul, Sam insists that he thinks better. However, his brother isn't convinced, and wonders if Sam really wants his soul back. Sam, looking pensive, insists that he still wants to get it back.
