Sam and Dean are at Bobby's waiting for their friend to return with more booze. Balthazar appears and immediately starts going through Bobby's collection of spell ingredients. As he works, he explains that Castiel has gone deep into hiding, and Raphael has launched attacks on all of the angel's allies to lure Castiel out. Balthazar draws a symbol on the window and then gives Sam a room key. Virgil, Raphael's assassin/angel, appears and telekinetically slams Balthazar into a wall. Balthazar tells the Winchesters to run and then telekinetically pushes them through the window. The brothers land on a mattress and the television crew outside applaud them for their stunt.
The brothers look around and realize that they're on a set of Bobby's house. The director, Robert Singer, is happy with the take but the first assistant director suggests that they freeze-frame. They go along with his ideas and move on. The make-up artists take them to their tables and Dean discovers that he's wearing make-up. Sam does an interview with Trish Evion, a reporter, who knows about everything he's done and asks what's next. He realizes what's going on and tells Dean that their lives are a TV show, and they're actors named Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. They go outside and find several Impala models, and try to pray to summon Castiel. They spot Castiel and ask him what's going on, and he dramatically informs them that Balthazar cast them into an alternate reality. However, he's confused when they complain, and asks for the key. When Sam hands it over, Castiel explains that it opens a room containing every weapon Balthazar stole from Heaven. When the brothers ask him why they're in a TV series, "Castiel" complains that someone has done script rewrites again. "Castiel" hands over the script and they realize that he's an actor, Misha Collins, reciting lines from the show's script. They walk away, while Misha figures that they're trying to punk him and tweets his fans with the news.
The brothers find Jensen's trailer and go inside. They discover that Jensen has a RC helicopter and a 300-gallon aquarium. Sam looks up Jensen on the Internet and discovers that he was born in Texas and starred on a soap opera called
Days of Our Lives in his early career. Dean is not amused, and they figure they're out of range of Castiel. However, Dean recreates Balthazar's spell and figures they have to get the ingredients and go back to the same window. They go back to the set to get the ingredients, only to discover that everything is props. The crew is impressed that who they think are the two actors are even talking to each other. The brothers drive off the set only to discover that the Impala they've chosen has no gas because it's a prop. They have their chauffeur, Clif, drive them to Jared's home, which turns out to be a manor. The brothers are shocked to discover they're not even in the United States, but are filming in Vancouver.
The Padalecki manor is filled with expensive paintings and tech toys, Dean heads for the bar and discovers that Jared has an alpaca in his backyard. A woman who looks like the demon Ruby comes in and complains, and then kisses Sam, and they realize that she's Jared's wife, Genevieve. She assumes that Dean is faking shock, and notes that he's never been there before. Genevieve leaves for the international otter adoption charity dinner and Dean congratulates Sam. They go online and look up the ingredients, and Sam figures they can buy them using their credit cards. However, Dean discovers that Jensen's card is already maxed out. He settles in on the couch while Sam grabs a bear. Genevieve comes back and he asks her if she knows about any of the apocalyptic events of the last year. She points out that he's describing plot points from Season 5 of his show, and suspects that he's been working too hard. Genevieve takes up to the bedroom for some quality time together.
The next morning, the brothers have Clif drive them to the airport to pick up the ingredients before they clear customs. They go to the set and start unpacking, but the crew arrives and is surprised to see them there early. Dean asks Robert to clear the set for an hour, claiming they need to rehearse. The director tells them that he'll clear the set once they shoot the scheduled pages. The Winchesters have no choice but to play a scene. It doesn't go well. Singer finally calls a break, while Misha tweets his fans on the problems. When the crew goes to have a teleconference with executive producer Sera Gamble, Dean and Sam go onto the set with the ingredients. Singer warns Sera that his actors are now living in Jared's manor, and that they suspect black market organs or drugs. Dean finishes the sigil and the brothers leap through the window... and don't go anywhere.
Back at the trailer, the Winchesters try to figure out why the spell didn't work, and Sam informs Dean that the Apocalypse never happened and the supernatural is all pretend. The spell didn't work because there is no magic, no Hell, no Heaven, no God... and no angels.
The angelic sigil appears on the set window and Virgil comes crashing through into the dimension.
As the brothers leave the set, Virgil attacks them but discovers that he has now powers. They attack him, and the stunt crew figure that Dean and Sam are attacking an extra. As they break it up, Virgil grabs the key from Sam and walks away.
Back in teleconference, Robert explains to Sera that his actors were beating an extra to death, and that they must be on an acid trip. He wants the show's creator, Kripke, to come in and talk to the actors. However, Sera notes that Kripke is off at his cabin finishing his pilot for
Octacobra.
Misha leaves for the night and gets the sensation that someone is in the backseat. As he tweets about his suspicion, Virgil emerges from the backseat, holds a knife to his throat, and forces him to drive away.
The brothers return to the set and find Robert waiting for them. He wonders if a raise will calm them down, and they realize that his name is Bobby Singer. As Sam searches for the key, Dean tells Robert that where he's from, nobody knows who they are but they matter. Sam figures that Virgil has the key and the brothers quit.
Virgil takes Misha to an alleyway and cuts his throat, and uses his blood to call to Raphael.
When the brothers return to the manor, Genevieve informs them that Misha has been stabbed to death. They go to the alleyway and talk to a homeless man who saw the murder and says that the killer called Raphael in Heaven, and a voice responded, telling the killer to go to the place where he crossed over at the time of the crossing. They figure Virgil will head for the set and plan to take him on.
Virgil goes to a gun store and waits until he's alone with the owner, and then knocks him out. When a customer comes in, he shoots him.
The brothers return to the set, and Dean worries that they may be stuck forever. He wonders if Sam wants to go back given everything that Jared Padalecki has, but Sam says that they're friends are back home and in their current world, they're not even brothers.
Eric Kripke arrives at the studio and Robert explains what's happening. He prepares to talk to the actors, but Virgil arrives and Eric goes to talk to him. The angel shoots him down and then kills Robert as well.
As Virgil enters the set, he shoots down more of the crew. Dean and Sam tackle him and knock him into the set. They grab the key as the sigil appears on the window, and Raphael slams them through the window. The angel arrives, wearing a female body, drives them to the ground, and takes the key. Balthazar arrives and explains that the key is useless, and he's already found the weapons. He used Sam and Dean as a distraction, and Castiel arrives. He tells Raphael to step away, explaining that the power of the weapons is with him. Castiel tells Raphael to back off, and the archangel disappears. Balthazar wishes Castiel well and disappears, and Castiel returns the brothers to Bobby's house on their own world. He admits that the plan was Balthazar's but he would have done the same thing, and warns that if he loses, the world loses with him. He apologizes, says that he'll explain when he can, and teleports away.
Sam confirms that they're not on a set, and Dean points out that they're broke again. Sam figures that at least they're talking.
