Shut Up, Dr. Phil - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Realtor Wendy Goodson goes to the salon to have her hair done. Chris sets her up for the hairdryer and goes into the next room. The hairdryer begins to overheat and Wendy yells for help, but is unable to remove it or get anyone’s attention over the music. When Chris returns to the room, he discovers that Holly’s head has been fried to a crisp.

Dean is trying to sleep at the motel and has nightmares of Castiel and the Leviathans, Sam hallucinating Lucifer, and finally himself killing Amy. When he wakes up, Dean discovers that Sam has gone out. He pours himself a drink and checks the Internet, and discovers that two people, Holly Goodson and Carl Dunlap, have died in Prosperity, Ohio under mysterious circumstances. Sam returns from his run and Dean complains that he’s exercising, and then tells him about the deaths. As they prepare to leave, Sam asks what’s going on with his brother. Dean refuses to answer and complains that Sam has turned over a new leaf and might see things different, but he’s still the same. Sam accepts that and walks away, much to Dean’s disgust.

Curt the shapeshifted Leviathan assures his superiors by phone that he’s on the trail of Sam and Dean and apologizes for the delay. He goes to his car where he has a corpse tied up for a snack.

Sam and Dean arrive in Prosperity and pose as FBI agents. Sam talks to Wendy’s sister, who insists that Wendy had no enemies and volunteered at the church. She doesn’t know of any connection between Wendy and Carl, an architect, and asks Sam to find out who did it.

Dean goes to the hair salon and talks to Chris, who explains that the hairdryer couldn’t have possibly killed someone the way that things happened. As Dean looks around, he finds a small coin on the floor. He calls to tell Sam what’s he’s found, and notices a bus bench with an advertisement for Wendy’s realtor office, surrounded by dead plants. They figure the coin is a hex talisman and Dean says that he’ll pick Sam up... after he picks up a bottle of booze.

Dewey Stevens, the owner of a construction company, is closing up for the day and goes to the porta potty. Outside, a nailgun activates on its own and the gun moves through the air to the porta potty. When Dewey comes out, it shoots him repeatedly, nailing him to the back wall. It then moves closer and fires two more nails through his eyes before shutting down.

Later, Dean talks to the sheriff, who says that Dewey was a pillar of the community, just like Wendy. There was no generator on the truck and the sheriff wonders how someone used the nailgun as a murder weapon. Dean examines the porta potty and finds another coin. He goes to see Sam, who is checking Dewey’s computer, and shows him the coin. Sam has checked Dewey’s elogs and learned that he, Wendy, and Carl were all working on a shopping mall project together. The project fell apart and now the three of them are dead. The developer, Don Stark, is still alive. He’s another pillar of the community, with a statue outside of the community center. As they talk, Dean drinks from a flask, insisting that they’re always on the job. Bobby calls to identify the coin as a 15th century Romanian ducat. The brothers notice that the plants around the bust are dead and Dean remembers that the same thing happened at the bus bench with Wendy’s picture on it.

Chet drives toward Prosperity.

The brothers go to see Don and point out he had a relationship with all three victims. Don says that the mall project simply fell through. His assistant, Jenny Klein, is leaving for the dry cleaners and tells Don that she made some coconut cupcakes for him. Sam goes to the bathroom and then searches the bedroom. He finds a pair of woman’s shoes and a box full of hex tokens, and then goes back downstairs. When Don says that everyone admires, Sam asks if that includes his wife, having figured they’re divorced. Don admits that he and his wife Maggie have a temporary separation and it’s a misunderstanding. Sam figures that he had an affair and Dean points out that Jenny is very attractive. Don finally admits that he had a brief “thing” with a business associate. Maggie found out about it and wanted some time off, and Dean figures that the affair was with Wendy. They warn Don to be careful and suggest he should take Maggie to dinner and apologize.

Outside, Sam tells his brother what he found. They notice dead plants around the house and figure that Maggie is a witch and Don has no idea. Bobby calls and Dean convinces him to find a spell to stop a witch. The brothers then go to Maggie’s new house and Sam watches from outside as Dean breaks in. He searches the bedroom and finds a closet filled with hex tokens and photos of the three victims... and Jenny. Outside, Maggie arrives and Sam tries to delay her. When that fails, Sam bumps her car and sets off the alarm, warning Dean. Dean grabs the photo of Jenny and gets out without Maggie seeing him, but warns Sam that Maggie will soon realize what happened and use a different photo. The brothers go to Jenny’s house to save her.

Maggie discovers that someone has taken the photo and casts her spell on a different. Meanwhile, Jenny is making cupcakes and tries one. She discovers it contains a miniature bleeding heart and starts vomiting out blood. Sam and Dean arrive and manage to find and destroy the coin just in time. They explain what happened and tell Jenny to pack up and move a few hundred miles away. When Sam suggests that she cool things with Don, Jenny insists that there’s nothing between them.

Maggie is preparing for the art auction at the community center and her best friend Sue helps her. Sue admits that she regrets telling Maggie about Wendy and Don, but Maggie assures her that she is better off knowing and loves her for it. Don comes in and Sue confronts her, insisting what she told Maggie about him was lies. Maggie comes over and he asks to speak to her privately, and Maggie agrees. He tells her that she’s had her fun with Wendy and was very creative, but enough is enough. Maggie doesn’t see it that way, but Don says that she edged him out of her life. He warns her that two FBI agents came by asking questions, and Maggie tells him that they’re hunters. Don insists that it has to stop but she refuses.

As Don leaves the community center, the ground shakes and his commemorative bust cracks in two. Sam and Dean are watching and see the entire thing, and realize that Maggie could destroy the entire town in her fit of anger. Bobby calls and provides them with the ingredients for the spell they need to cast to take Maggie out.

That night, Maggie rehearses her speech for the art auction and directs the caterers. Sue assures her that everything is perfect.

Dean is trying to eat when Sam arrives with chilled chicken feet, one of the spell ingredients. He admits that they smell because the butcher’s freezer has shut down, and businesses have been having problems since Maggie has become angry at her husband.

Don parks outside the community center. Inside, Maggie and Sue share a toast, but Sue discovers an eyeball in her martini. The paintings melt and Sue asks what is going on. Maggie insists that Don did it because he knew what the auction meant to her. Sue assures Maggie that she has people that love her and Don can’t take that away from her. A caterer’s tray rises into the air and decapitates Maggie, and outside Don smirks and drives away.

The brothers arrive at the community center and discover what happened. They realize that Don is responsible and that they’re dealing with two witches. They head for Don’s house, unaware that Chet is following them.

Sam and Dean park outside Don’s house and figure that now the two witches will go after each other directly since they’ve eliminated each other’s friends. Maggie arrives and finds Don waiting for her. Before they can battle it out, Dean and Sam come in and cast their spell. However it fails and Maggie points out that they don’t use thoroughly chilled chicken feet. As the two witches join forces to destroy the brothers, Sam proposes Plan B: counseling. Dean steps forward and says that since they haven’t yet wiped each other out, they must value what they’ve got. Sam says that they must have bonded and suggests that they might both have some blame, and Maggie strikes him down. When Dean tries to Maggie, Don strikes him down. Maggie points out that Carl introduces Wendy to Don and Dewey helped cover up their affair. Don insists that Wendy meant nothing to him but Maggie goes back to their problems back in the Renaissance. They argue over their 800-year-old history and Maggie accuses Don of having an affair with Jenny. Don denies it and Dean confirms that he’s telling the truth. Maggie strikes Dean down again and Don apologizes to her. Sam says that they’re talking and all they needed to do was talk. When Dean complains, Don summons a cloud of bees to silence him. Don then admits that he couldn’t possibly kill her and wants to grow old with her, and Maggie says she could never betray her. The two of them kiss, while Dean asks someone to call off the bees.

When Sam and Dean get back to their hotel room, Dean starts drinking again. Chet comes in and tells them that they’ll be dead in a matter of seconds. Dean shots him and black ooze pours out of the wound, but otherwise Chet is unharmed. He easily smashes both of them down, but Don comes in and paralyzes him with a spell. He warns them that the spell will only last for a few days. They wonder why he’s there and Don removes one of Maggie’s coins from beneath their beds. When they point out that they saved her marriage, Don notes that they also tried to kill her and leaves.

As the brothers load Chet into the Impala’s trunk, Dean calls to tell Bobby they have a prisoner. Sam points out that the Starks were able to solve their problems by opening up, and says that Dean do the same. Dean says that he always feels responsibility but Sam figures that it’s something specific and invites him to unload. Dean refuses and Sam wonders if they’re good. Dean says that they’re good and they drive off.
