Lawrence, Kansas: 22 Years Ago
A dog barks in the background as pans from gnarled branches to a two-story house. Inside the house, a woman carries a child while entering the nursery. She looks into the crib at the baby and sets the child she was carrying on the floor. The child, Dean, walks over to the crib and kisses his little brother, Sam, goodnight and the mother comes over to do the same. Dean runs over to the doorway when his father appears; his father scoops him up in his arms and asks if he thinks Sam is ready to toss the football around yet. The mother, Mary, exits the room and the father follows suit, shutting off the lights as he leaves. Sam wiggles around in his crib, staring at the mobile above him. As he stares at the mobile, the shot cuts to the crescent-moon nightlight as it buzzes then shorts out.
In the parents’ bedroom, Mary listens to Sam and the static feedback the baby monitor is giving off. She rolls over to wake up her husband, John, but finds that he’s not in bed next to her. Seeing this, Mary switches on the light to find John not in their room at all. Sleepily, she walks down the hallway looking for her husband finds and a silhouette figure looking over Sam in his crib. Thinking its John, she asks if Sam’s hungry, but the silhouette figure shushes her so she leaves the room. As she walks down the hallway, a light bulb begins blinking on and off. Thinking nothing of it, Mary taps the bulb then heads down the stairs to find John asleep in his easy-chair. Horrified, she spins around and runs up to Sam’s room screaming. The screams jolt John awake and he runs up the stairs towards Sam’s room. There he finds Sam in his crib, but Mary is no where to be found. John looks down at his infant son and smiles until a dark drops fall on to the baby’s blanket. John reaches out to touch it and three more drops hit the back of his hand. He looks up at the ceiling and shouts in horror when he sees his wife up on the ceiling. Flames burst out of Mary’s body and waves of fire tear across the roof of the house. Sam begins to cry, snapping John out of his paralyzed state. He grabs Sam and hands him off to Dean, telling him to take his brother and get out of the house. Once the boys get out of the room, Mary’s body explodes, engulfing the house. Outside, Dean stops to watch the flames until John grabs both of the boys and runs across the lawn as the windows of the house explode above their heads.
Cut to the aftermath of the fire. Firefighters spray water on the house while EMTs wheel out the stretcher carrying the remains of Mary’s body. John looks on sadly as he sits on the hood of his 1967 Chevy Impala.
Stanford University: Present Day
The camera pans from a picture of John and Mary, pre-fire, to a woman in tall, red vinyl boots. She asks Sam if he’s ready to go, and Sam asks if he really has to go to the Halloween party. The girl, Jessica, tells him that it will be fun, despite how he feels about Halloween. Cut to the party where the partygoers and Jessica toast Sam and his 174 score on the LSAT. Sam reveals that he has an interview with Stanford Law School on Monday. One of the guys asks how Sam likes being the ‘golden boy’ of the family, and Sam responds that his family doesn’t even know about his score or interview. Jessica tells him that she’s proud of him, and then pulls Sam in for a kiss.
Later back at home, Jessica and Sam are lying in bed. The camera pans over Sam and his eyes jerk open at the sound of shattering glass. He sneaks into the hallway and begins to attack a silhouette figure that turns out to be Sam’s brother, Dean. Sam and Dean argue about Dean breaking into the house and scaring Sam to death. Sam asks Dean what he’s doing there and why he didn’t just call. Their conversation is interrupted by Jessica when she enters the room wearing close to nothing. Sam introduces her to Dean as his girlfriend and Dean begins to flirt with her. Jessica tries to leave to put something on, but Dean replies that he “wouldn’t dream of it”. Soon after, Dean starts to discuss the family business. He tells Sam that their father hasn’t been home in awhile and Sam replies that he’s probably “working overtime on a Miller Time shift”. Dean replies that “Dad's on a hunting trip. And he hasn't been home in a few days.” Upon hearing this, Sam’s expression changes and pulls Dean away so they can talk privately. Outside, Sam and Dean argue about their father and discuss how they spent their childhood hunting for the thing that killed their mother. Dean shows Sam some Internet print-outs about their father’s last hunting trip and newspaper stories about a kidnapping in Jericho, California. Finally, Dean shares with Sam a voice mail from their father that ends with "be careful, Dean. We're all in danger." Dean insists that Sam come with him to California to track down their father, but Sam resists, telling him about his interview at Sanford. However, Dean is able to guilt him into going with him and before they can leave, Sam goes back into the apartment to tell Jessica that he’s leaving. Inside, he lies to her about where he’s going and assures her that he’ll be back for his interview on Monday.
Jericho, California
On a highway, a Volkswagen speeds by driven by a man heading home. As he drives, he comes across a woman dressed in white walking along the highway. He pulls the car over to the side of the road to talk to the woman and as he nears her, the stereo in the car quits working. He asks the woman if she’s having car trouble and she asks him to take her home. The man asks the mysterious woman where she lives. “At the end of Breckinridge Road”, she replies. While driving, the man tries to strike up a conversation with the woman, but she remains quiet. They arrive at Breckinridge Road to find that the woman lives in a run-down, abandoned house. Parked by the house, the woman whispers “I can never go home.” The man begins to talk about the house, then turns to the passenger seat to find that the woman has disappeared. He looks in the backseat, then climbs out of the car to check out the run-down house. As he walks into the house, the camera pans across a portrait of the woman and two children. He hollers “hello” down the hallway, then runs out of the house when a bat flies by his head. He leaps in his car and squeals his tires as he heads back to the highway.
On the highway, the camera pans across the man’s face, obviously scared, to the backseat with the woman in white is sitting. When the man looks in his rearview mirror, he freaks out and nearly drives off of the road. Instead of driving off of the cliff, the man’s car goes crashing through a “BRIDGE CLOSED” barrier onto a rickety old bridge. The car comes to a halt and the man begins to scream as the windows begin to fog up. The camera pans to the windshield where a blood spatter covers the windows.
Dean and Sam stop at a filling station while Dean tells Sam about his father’s credit card fraud that has funded their hunting trips. As they leave the station, the brothers argue over the music while they head down the road to Jericho. While driving, they come across police cars blocking off the bridge where the man had died that night. Dean reaches in the glove box and pulls out fake government IDs and then pulls up and parks next to the police cruisers. They walk up to the police and question them about the crash and the man’s death. The cops begin to become suspicious of Sam and Dean so they head back to their car before the sheriff catches on to them.
Cut to a marquee of Jericho's Highland Theater that is advertising an emergency town meeting on Sunday. At a diner, the brothers question two ladies about the death on the bridge, one of which is the girlfriend of the victim. They tell the brothers of a local legend involving a mysterious hitchhiker who kills whoever picks her up. Sam and Dean head to the Jericho public library where they pull up several articles about past deaths similar to the one that just occurred. They find the story of Constance Welch who found her kids dead in the bathtub then drowned herself in a nearby river, leaving behind her husband. Dean discovers that the bridge where the man was killed is the same bridge at the location of Constance’s death. The brothers leave the library and head for the bridge, trying to find a link between their father’s disappearance and Constance. After arguing about Sam wanting a normal life, Sam brings up their mother and her death, angering Dean. He backs away from Sam to cool down then notices the ghost of Constance on the nearby railing. Constance turns and looks at the boys before throwing herself into the river below. The brothers rush over to the railing and look for the woman, but Constance has gotten into their car and turns on the headlights, pointing them at Sam and Dean. Constance guns the engine and speeds down the bridge, aiming for the brothers. Seeing that there’s no way they can outrun Constance, the boys leap over the bridge into the water.
Sam was able to grab part of the bridge on the way down and manages to climb back onto the bridge. He spots Dean crawling out of the river onto the bank and hollers down to see if he’s alright. Dean walks back to the bridge and sit on the hood of the Impala. Cut to Dean paying for a motel room with a MasterCard issued for “Hector Aframian”. The motel owner tells the boys that another man, Burt Aframian, bought a room for an entire month there, and asks the boys if they’re having a family reunion. Dean and Sam break into “Burt’s” room, knowing that it’s really their father’s, and find a Geiger counter, hundreds of newspaper clippings taped to the wall, and an unpacked suitcase. Sam notices a ring of salt on the floor while Dean examines the articles about the Centennial Highway victims and tries to find a common link. On the wall, Sam reads an article about a "Woman in White" and decides that they need to talk to Constance’s husband. While Dean showers, Sam tries to hunt down an address for Joseph Welch. While searching, Sam comes across a an old photograph of a five-year-old Sam and an eleven-year-old Dean on a hunting trip in the mirror frame.
Later, Sam listens to his voice mail messages while Dean leaves to pick up some food from the nearby diner. He spots the motel owner talking to the sheriff and gesturing towards their father’s room. Dean calls Sam’s cell phone and tells him to take off. Sam runs out of the room and Dean is busted by the officer for his fake credit card and his fake federal ID and placed into the police car. At the interrogation room, the sheriff believes that Dean is somehow involved in the Centennial Highway murders until Dean points out that he was three years old at the time of the first disappearance in 1982. The sheriff goes through John’s day planner and flips to an entry reading “Dean 35-111”.
Meanwhile, Sam arrives at the house of Joseph Welch and begins questioning him about his relationship with Constance. Joseph tells him that they had a happy marriage, though Sam doesn’t believe him. He explains to Joseph about several different occurrences of the “Woman in White” and how each of them follow the same basic story: Her husband cheated on her so she drowned her children. Feeling guilty, the woman kills herself, then haunts the earth searching for unfaithful men to kill. Joseph denies everything, except for cheating on his wife. Upon hearing this, Sam bolts out of the house.
At the station, Dean continues to be interrogated until a shots-fired call is received. The sheriff locks Dean in the room, but Dean is able to get loose of his handcuffs by way of a paperclip. He escapes the station by climbing down the fire escape and manages to grab is father’s day planner in the process. Meanwhile, Sam is driving down the Centennial Highway and gets a call from Dean congratulating him on the fake shots-fired call. They exchange information about the woman that they’ve come across and then discuss the importance of the “Dean 35-111” message. Soon, they realize that it’s the coordinates of their father’s location and begin to talk until Sam slams on the brakes. The camera pans to reveal that Sam plowed through the ghost of Constance Welch. The shot cuts to Sam’s panicked face, then to the backseat where Constance is now sitting. She demands that Sam take her home. He refuses, but Constance is able to take control of the car telekinetically. Sam tries to regain control, but has no luck doing so. They arrive at the run-down home and Constance whispers that she “can never go home”. Sam tells her that she’s afraid to go home, but before he can continue talking to her, Constance disappears. She reappears in the front seat and lunges on to Sam and tries to get him to make-out with him. Sam resists her advances and tells her that she cannot kill him: he’s never been unfaithful. She lunges at his chest and tries to rip out his heart. He sees five bloody holes in his sweatshirt and suddenly the windows explode as Dean tries to shoot the ghost. While Constance is startled by the gunfire, Sam is able to turn on the ignition and as he shouts “I'm taking you home” to Constance, he drives the car through the run-down house.
Dean runs up to the house to retrieve his brother from the wreckage. Constance stands and stares at the portrait of her and her children. She hurls the portrait across the floor and then pins the brothers to the side of their car. As she telekinetically squeezes the life out of the brothers, the lights flicker and distract her. Water begins to pour down the stairs into the first floor and at the foot of the steps are Constance’s children who whisper “You've come home to us, Mommy!”. Constance screams as her body flickers between ghost form and human form, then disappears.
Sam and Dean crawl over to the puddle left over. Dean congratulates Sam on finding Constance’s weak spot. Cut to Sam and Dean driving down the highway. Sam determines that the coordinates left by their father are the coordinates for Blackwater Ridge, Colorado. Sam tells Dean that it’s 600 miles away and they begin to argue over Sam’s law school interview and how Dean thinks Sam needs to blow it off to help find their father. Later, Dean pulls the car up to Sam’s apartment. Sam goes in and hollers to Jessica that he’s home. He finds a plate of chocolate chip cookies on the table with a note reading "Missed you! Love you!". Sam smiles then heads to the bedroom where he hears the shower running. He lies down on the bed and closes his eyes. Sam, now asleep, begins to stir when drops of blood fall onto his forehead. Sam opens his eyes to find Jessica on the ceiling with a gash in her stomach. As he stares in horror, her body bursts into flames. Dean rushes into the room and grabs Sam just before Jessica’s body explodes and flames engulf the bedroom. Cut to firemen spraying down the apartment and EMTs wheeling out the remains of Jessica’s body. Sam gets into Dean’s Impala and tells his brother: “We've got work to do”.
