Fans complained that the Bloody Mary character was very similar to that of the girl in the movie The Ring. Several fans wrote letters of complaint, some of which were published in the October 31 - November 6, 2005 issue of TV Guide.

Several references are made to the film The Ring including the appearance of Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary's jerky movements when she walks, and Bloody Mary climbing out of the mirror.

Legend of Bloody Mary
Like in the episode, anyone who chants the words "Bloody Mary" three times in front of a mirror ends up summoning the spirit of Bloody Mary. However, the folklore tales tell various stories about what Bloody Mary does to the person that summons her, from killing the person (similar to what happened in this episode) to stealing their eyes or driving them mad.
| Mirror Folklore
As shown in the episode, there is a lot of folklore associated with mirrors. Some cultures believe that the soul projects out of the body into mirrors in the form of a reflection while others hold mirrors in high supersitition, believing that breaking a mirror will result in seven years of bad luck (as referred to in this episode).
