In Hibbing, Minnesota, a young boy, Evan McKay, looks out the window of his apartment and watches a neighbor, Alvin Jenkins, take his garbage out to the dumpster. The man hears something moving beneath a nearby car, looks under it to investigate, and something pulls him under the car. Later that week, Dean and Sam arrive, posing as state policeman, and ask what Evan saw. He says that he heard a noise like a monster would make, and his mother makes him admit that he was watching a monster movie at the time. Evan describes the monster's noise as a whining growl...

Episode Quotes
Deputy Kathleen Hudak: So you know his brother Dean Winchester died in St. Louis and was suspected of murder?
Dean: Yeah, Dean, kinda the black sheep of the family. Handsome, though.

Sam: I was looking for you.
Alvin Jenkins: Oh yeah?
Sam: Yeah.
Alvin Jenkins: Well, no offense, but this is a piss-poor rescue.

Deputy Kathleen Hudak: Says here your badge was stolen and there's a picture of you. (shows Dean a picture of a large black man)
Dean: I lost some weight. And I got that Michael Jackson skin disease...

(while trying to get out of handcuffs)
Dean: I gotta start carrying paperclips.

Deputy Kathleen Hudak: Your, uh... your cousin's looking for you.
Sam: Thank God. Where is he?
Deputy Kathleen Hudak: I, uh... I cuffed him to my car.

Dean: Have you seen them?
Sam: Yeah. dude, they're just people.
Dean: And they jumped you? You must be getting a little rusty there, kiddo.

Dean: I'll say it again. Demons I get, people are crazy!

Dean: Oh, you gotta be kiddin’ me. That’s what this is about? You yahoos hunt people?
Pa Bender: You ever killed before?
Dean: That depends on what you mean.
Pa Bender: I've hunted all my life. Just like my father, his before him. I've hunted deer, and bear. Even got a cougar once. Ho boy. But the best hunt is human. Oh, there’s nothin’ like it. Holdin’ their life in your hands. Seein’ the fear in their eyes just before they go dark. Makes you feel powerful alive.
Dean: You’re a sick puppy.

Pa Bender: We never been that sloppy.
Dean: Yeah, well... don’t sell yourself short – you’re plenty sloppy.

Pa Bender: So what, you with that pretty cop? Are you a cop?
Dean: If I tell you, will you promise not to make me into an ashtray?

Pa Bender: Only reason I don’t let my boys take you right here and now is there’s something I need to know.
Dean: How about “It’s not nice to marry your sister”?

Pa Bender: Tell me, any other cops gonna come lookin' for you?
Dean: Oh, eat me! No, no, no...wait, wait. You actually might.

Dean: Don't ever do that again.
Sam: Do what?
Dean: Go missing like that.
Sam: You were worried about me!
Dean: I'm just saying, you vanish like that again and I'm not looking for you.
Sam: Sure you won't.
Dean: I'm not!
Sam: So you got sidelined by a 13-year old girl?
Dean: Shut up.
Sam: I'm just saying, getting a little rusty there, kiddo?
Dean: Shut up!

Episode Goofs
When Sam goes out to the parking lot, he puts the journal on the third car, from the end, bends under, and looks under it. However, when he stands up, he's moved one car back.

The police database shows that both Sam and Dean are 6'4" tall. However, it is obvious that Sam is several inches taller than Dean.

As Sam and Jenkins talk to each other, as Sam asks where they are, a boom mike can be seen in the upper edge of the frame.

Dean struggles with trying to open his handcuffs, trying to open the one on his wrist. In one shot, as the Bender brothers start talking, Dean is thoroughly handcuffed to the car. However, as the brothers keep talking, about five seconds elapse and when they arrive, Dean has managed to pick both locks and remove the handcuffs so that conveniently no trace that he was there.

The Benders hit Dean in the nose. In subsequent shots the blood disappears, appears, disappears, and appears again.

Cultural References
Kid: Godzilla vs. Mothra.
Dean: That's my favorite Godzilla! So much better than the original, right?

Dean and the young boy are referencing the Godzilla movie series including 1954's Godzilla, 1962's Godzilla vs. Mothra, and the remakes: 1992's Godzilla vs. Mothra and 1998's Godzilla.

Jenkins: Ned Beatty time, man.

This is a reference to the movie Deliverance, which starred Ned Beatty, Voight, Burt Reynolds, and Ronny Cox. The four men play city men who decide to go canoeing and run into dangerous mountain men.

Dean: If I tell you, will you promise not to make me into an ashtray?

Serial killer Ed Gein often used body parts from his victims to make furnature or decorations, including skulls turned into ashtrays.

Episode References
When the computer shows the details about Dean's death, it's referring to the episode "Skin" in which one of the shapeshifters died while in Dean's form.

The Benders

The story of the Bender family is very similar to that of the 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in which a family of cannibals in Texas abduct, torture then kill customers at their gas station. Though the family in this episode is given a seemingly mystical element, their use of humans as hunting targets and prey ties in closely to the story in the film.
