Dead Man's Blood - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In Manning, Colorado, Daniel Elkins is going over his notes. The bartender comments to one of her patrons that Elkins is a nice old man who lives up the road and just goes over his papers. A group comes in the bar and Elkins studies them carefully. Their leader, Kate, orders a bottle of whiskey. When the bartender turns to Elkins, she discovers that he's slipped away.

Elkins drives to his cabin and turns to discover Kate in the cabin. She says it's been a while and he asks what she wants. Elkins throws a knife into her chest, but she casually pulls it out and says he can do better. He runs into his study, quickly barricades the door, and removes a Colt revolver from his safe. He tries to load it, but two of Kate's men smash through the skylight, grab Elkins, and pin him to the desk. Kate picks up the Colt and tells Elkins that it wouldn't do him much good, and then tells the others that they're eating in.

Sam and Dean are eating breakfast at a diner and Sam hasn't found any leads. Dean suggests they head back East so Sam can see Sarah, but his brother says they have work to do. When Sam finds an article reporting that Elkins was mauled by a bear, Dean remembers that John had Elkins' phone number listed in his journal. They drive to Manning and break into Elkins' cabin, and find a ring of salt against demons. Dean finds Elkins' journal and they realize that he was a hunter. As they search, they're unaware that someone is watching from the woods. Meanwhile, the brothers realize that multiple attackers came after Elkins, and Dean finds scratches in the floor. He captures them on paper and realizes it's a mail drop, just like the kind that John uses.

The brothers go into town and use the combination, and find an envelope inside addressed to J.W. As they prepare to open it, John gets into the car behind them. He explains that he was watching them at the cabin to make sure that no one was following them. John tells them that he and Elkins were close, but then had a falling out and hadn't seen each other in years. He opens the envelope, which explains that Nevins had an antique Colt revolver, and John tells the brothers that the gun is important. Vampires killed Elkins, and John had believed they were extinct. John explains most of the lore about vampires is incorrect, but they need blood to survive.

A couple is driving down the road when they have to brake before they hit a body in the road. The boyfriend gets out to investigate and the "dead man" opens his eyes and extends his fangs.

As Dean and Sam sleep at a motel, John hears a report on the police scanner and wakes his sons. They go to the crime scene and Sam complains that John is keeping them away from the police. Dean warns him not to start. John checks with the police and confirms that the vampires are heading west. When Sam questions how he knows. John finally shows them a vampire tooth to confirm that they were there. As they leave, John complains that Dean isn't keeping the car in condition.

As they drive, Dean reads John's information on vampires, which explains that the vampires take their victims back to their lair to bleed for weeks. Sam complains and Dean notes that it's starting again. He defends their father giving orders, but Sam insists that John treats them like children. When he asks if Dean is comfortable with that, his brother says he's okay with it if that's what it takes.

The vampires are at their lair in a barn, and one of them, Beau, is taunting their captives. The girl, Jenny, takes a drink and then spits it in Beau's face, but Kate tells him to wait until Luther gets there. When Luther arrives, Kate kisses him and tells him about their captives, and he lets the vampires kill the boyfriend. She tells him that she killed Elkins, but Luther tells her that she made a mistake and the hunters will figure out that vampires were involved. When he sees the Colt, he warns her that it's no ordinary gun.

John calls Dean to tell him to pull over, and Sam asks how. When Dean doesn't have an answer, Sam pulls the Impala in front of John and demands answers about why the gun is so important. Dean tries to break it up, but John reminds Sam that he walked out on them when they needed him. Sam says John was the one who told him not to come back, and gets in the Impala to continue the pursuit.

Jenny watches as Kate and Luther start to make out, and then Luther cuts Kate's wrist so she can feed her blood to Jenny. Luther watches and welcomes Jenny to the pack.

The next morning, Beau arrives at sunrise and gets inside. The Winchesters are watching from nearby, and prepare their weapons. John finally tells them about the Colt, and explains that there's a legend that Samuel Colt made a special gun for a hunter in 1835, and created 13 bullets. The hunter used it six times before disappearing along with the Colt, and Daniel eventually found it. According to the stories, the gun can kill anything... including the demon that killed Mary Winchester.

The trio slips into the barn and move among the sleeping vampires. Dean finds other captives and starts to open their cell door, while Sam finds Jenny and starts to free her. She wakes up and yells for the other vampires. John shatters a window, letting in the sunshine, and tells his sons to run. They get to the cars, and John catches up to them. He tells them that the vampires have their scent and won't lose it, and they need to go to the nearest funeral home.

Sam and John go back to the cabin and wait for Dean, and Sam worries that he's taking too long. John explains that he put $100 into a savings bond on the day Sam was born, and intended to use it for his college fund. He put in $100 every month, and admits that he never wanted Sam to be a hunter. However, when Mary died, all John saw was evil, and all he wanted was keeping his sons alive. When Sam said he wanted to go school, John worried that he'd be vulnerable and forgot what Sam wanted. Sam assures him that they're not different anymore, not after what happened to Mary and Jessica. John admits he spent the college fund on ammo and they both share a laugh. Dean returns with what they need from the funeral home: a bottle of blood.

Later, Dean is on the road checking the Impala. Kate and another vampire, Hank, attack him, but it's an ambush. John and Sam shoot them with arrows soaked with dead man's blood, which is like poison to vampires. They take Kate prisoner and John decapitates the other vampire..

Deep in the woods, John ties up Kate and uses wood from a particular tree to disguise their own scent. Vampires mate for life, so John figures that Luther will come hunting for his mate. He tells Dean and Sam to leave and let him get the Colt, and Sam realizes he's going to go after the demon on his own. Dean finally speaks up and objects, asking why John wants them out of the fight. John says he can't take on the demon when he's worried about his sons, and he can't bear to watch his children die after what happened to Mary. Dean asks what happens if John dies, and says that they have to do it together. John repeats his orders to them and leaves.

Beau returns to the barn and informs Luther that the Winchesters decapitated Hank and captured Kate. They realize that John is up on the highway... and he has Kate with him.

John is driving down the highway when he spots the vampires pursuing him.

At the barn, Beau is drinking when he hears something at the door. He goes to investigate, and Dean sneaks up on him and decapitates him.

The vampires following John give up the pursuit.

Dean starts to free the prisoners.

The vampires get ahead of John and cut him off. He gets out and Luther asks who he is. John explains that his friends are cleaning out his nest, and brings Kate out of the truck. He threatens to decapitate her if Luther doesn't turn over the Cult, and says he'll use it for something more dangerous than them. Luther agrees to the exchange and puts the Colt on the road. As John bends over to get the Colt, Kate manages to free herself and knocks him back, and Luther slams John into the truck. As he moves in for the kill, Sam and Dean open fire from the woods. Luther manages to grab Sam and threatens to break his neck unless Dean surrenders. Luther insists they have as much life to live as they do, and John shoots him in the head with one of the bullets from the Colt. The vampire goes down, dead, and Kate starts to go after them. Jenny pulls her away and they drive off.

Later, Sam and Dean are packing and John points out that they disobeyed orders. When Dean points out that they saved his life, John admits that they're right, and figures they're stronger as a family. He says that they'll go after the demon together, and the brothers agree.
