In My Time of Dying - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In the aftermath of the possessed truck driver smashing his vehicle into the Impala, the demon approaches the Winchesters and wrenches open the driver’s side door. A barely-conscious Sam points the Colt at him and threatens to kill him, but the demon says that he knows Sam is saving the bullet for someone else. The demon hesitates, and then leaves its host body. The driver, restored to normal, looks at what he’s done in horror.

Paramedics arrive and transfer the Winchesters to the hospital.

Later, Dean wakes up and gets out of his hospital bed. He goes out of the hallway into a curiously empty hospital. Downstairs, he finally finds some people, but the nurse at the desk ignores him. Realizing what’s going on, Dean runs to a nearby room and finds his own body there, lying in a coma.

Sam comes into dean’s room, but has no idea that the spirit of his brother is there. The doctor comes in and tells Sam that John is okay, but Dean is suffering from a cerebral edema and may never wake up. Dean and Sam both refuse to accept that. Sam goes to see John, who gives him a fake insurance card to cover their expenses. John says that he’ll check for anyone who can heal Dean, but warns that the odds aren’t good. He then focuses on the Colt, asking where it is. Sam takes offense, but John warns that if the Yellow-Eyed Demon is hunting them, it’s their only defense. When Sam confirms that the Colt is in the Impala’s trunk and Bobby is having it towed, John tells him to go with their friend and recover their gun. As Sam goes, John hands him a list of ingredients and claims that it’s for a demon-protection spell. After a moment’s hesitation, Sam asks if John knows about the Yellow-Eyed Demon’s plans for him and the other children, but John says he doesn’t. Dean, watching, doesn’t believe him.

Bobby and Sam get the Impala to Bobby’s junkyard, and Bobby warns that it’s not worth a tow. Sam insists that he’s not giving up on it, and Dean will want to fix it when he recovers. Realizing what the car symbolizes, Bobby agrees. Sam gives him the list of ingredients and Bobby hesitates. Picking up on his hesitation, Sam asks him what’s going on.

John goes to Dean’s room and contemplates his son’s comatose body. Dean begs him for help, wondering why he isn’t doing anything to help, and insists that he’s given everything he’s had to the war on evil. There’s a strange rumbling noise and Dean looks outside. A mysterious spirit-form moves past him and Dean follows it down the hallway to a room where a nurse lies dying. He calls for help without success and watches as the nurse dies.

Sam returns to John’s room, and Dean tries to warn him without success that something in the hospital is killing people. His brother can’t hear him, and turns instead to John and says that the ingredients are for a demon-summoning spell, rather than protection. John insists that he has a plan, but Sam figures he cares more about the Yellow-Eyed Demon than Sam. His father says that Sam should have killed the Yellow-Eyed Demon when he had the chance, and Dean would still be alive. Angry at their arguing, Dean slaps at a glass and it hits the floor. Sam and John realize that something is going on.

Before they can pursue the issue, Dean weakens and flickers, and the doctors run by outside. Sam goes to investigate, and finds the doctors trying to revive Dean. The same spirit from before hovers over Dean’s body. Dean grabs it, but it throws him back and then leaves. Dean’s body revives, and Dean runs after the spirit only for it to disappear. He goes back to his room and tries to reassure Sam that he’ll get the spirit before it gets him.

As Dean searches for the spirit, he hears a woman yelling. He goes to the lobby and finds a brunette in hospital gowns trying to get someone’s attention. She can see Dean, and introduces herself as Tessa. They go to her room where her mother is crying over her comatose body, and Dean explains that they are both having an out-of-body experience. He says that if their bodies get better, they’ll return to their bodies.

Sam tells John that he “sensed” Dean, and wonders if his spirit is possible. John admits that anything is possible, and Sam goes to get an Ouija board. Before he goes, John says that he won’t hunt the Yellow-Eyed Demon until they make sure Dean is okay.

As they walk through the hospital, Dean tells Tessa that he’s impressed that she’s taking things so well. She says that she’s not okay with dying, but that she’s accepted it because it’s out of her control. Dean disagrees, saying that people already have a choice to fight or die. The doctors announce a cold blue and Dean goes to the room, where a young girl is dying. The spirit is there and touches the girl, and then disappears. The doctors call it, and a nurse comments that at least now the girl isn’t suffering.

Sam takes the Ouija board to Dean’s room, much to Dean’s disgust. However, he uses it to “talk” to Sam, moving the planchette to spell out the word “hunt.” Dean then spells out the word “Reap,” and Sam realizes that a Reaper is after his brother’s spirit. Dean has realized that he’s dealing with a Reaper, and it’s taking people rather than killing them itself. Sam warns him that if the Reaper is there naturally, there’s no way to stop it, but refuses to accept that. He goes to John’s room to see if his father has answer, only to discover that John is gone.

John goes to the hospital boiler room and begins casting an invocation.

Dean goes to his father’s room as Sam goes through his father’s journal looking for information on Reapers. Dean reads along with him and notices one particular entry. He runs to Tessa’s room and discovers that there is no body. Tessa is waiting for him, and he tells her that Reapers can appear as anything they want. She readily admits that she’s a Reaper, and made him see her body and her “mother” earlier. Tessa knew that he wouldn’t talk to her unless she took a human form. When Dean asks what she wants, Tessa tells him that he’s living on borrowed time and death is nothing to fear.

John casts the demon-summoning spell, but nothing happens. A janitor comes in and demands to know what John is doing there, but John draws the Colt and points it at the “janitor,” realizing that the Yellow-Eyed Demon is possessing the body. Its eyes turn yellow and it summons two possessed doctors. It asks why John summoned it, and warns John that he only has one chance to shoot him. John lowers the gun and says that he summoned it to make a deal.

Sam talks to Dean’s body, saying that he can’t do everything alone and he doesn’t want to lose his brother now that they’ve come back together.

Dean asks Tessa to make him an exception, insisting that he has to be there for his family. She tells him that the fight is over, and all soldiers that she’s taken feel the same way. Dean warns that Sam may die and Tessa agrees, but says that there’s nothing Dean can do about it and he’s earned an honorable death. Dean refuses to accept that and tells her he’s staying. Tessa admits that he can choose to stay, but he won’t get into his body. Trapped outside of his body as a spirit, Dean will eventually go insane and become a violent spirit, like so many before him that made the same choice.

John offers the Yellow-Eyed Demon the Colt and the last bullet in return for Dean’s restoration. It admits that it cares more about the Colt than Dean, and that neither of John’s son is a thread. The Yellow-Eyed Demon realizes that John knows the truth about Sam, and John admits that he’s been playing dumb. It agrees to have someone it knows bring Dean back, and agrees to John’s terms. However, there is one more thing that it wants, as much as the Colt.

Tessa asks Dean to choose, although she won’t tell him where he’s going if he goes with her. He starts to answer, but the lights suddenly flicker. She turns to a vent where a demon cloud enters the room and goes into her body. Her eyes turn yellow and she turns to Dean, grabbing his head.

Dean revives in his own body, and Sam calls for help.

The next morning, the doctor tells Sam and Dean that Dean has totally healed. Once the doctor leaves, Sam brings Dean up to speed because he doesn’t remember anything except a sensation that something is wrong. John comes in and Sam asks if he went after the Yellow-Eyed Demon. When his father lies, Sam realizes it and calls him on it. John says that he doesn’t want to fight, and admits that he’s made mistakes. Sam wonders if something is wrong with his father, but John says he’s just tired and asks him to get a cup of coffee.

Once Sam leaves, John turns to Dean and tells him he put too much pressure on him as a child. He apologizes, admitting he made him grow up too fast. Dean also realizes that something is wrong and asks why he’s saying what he’s saying. John tells him to watch out for Sam, and then leans over and whispers something in his ear. Dean stares at him in shock

John goes to a room and puts the Colt down, and then says “Okay.”

Sam returns with the coffee and discovers John lying on the floor of his room. The doctors try to revive him without success. Sam and Dean arrive but can only watch as the doctors declare John dead.
