Neil meets his girl pal Angela Mason and offers her chocolate, beer, and emo music to console her after her breakup. There's a knock on the door and they figure it's Angela's ex, Matt Harrison. Neil answers the door and tells Matt to chill out, but Matt shoves his way in. When he goes to the kitchen, there's no sign of Angela.
Angela is driving through the night, crying, when she gets a call from Matt. He tries to apologize but she refuses to accept it. As she screams at Matt, and then says that she loves him, she hits an embankment and is killed instantly.
Sam insists that they go to visit Mary's grave, but Dean thinks it's stupid. In response, Sam explains that it's about her memory but his brother doesn't buy it. He suggests that they go to the road house, and Sam says he should drop him off at the grave and go there. Dean refuses and accompanies him to the graveyard. As Sam puts flowers down and then buries John's dog tags and says that he loves her. Meanwhile, Dean is looking at the graves and notices a dead tree in the center of the cemetery. Stepping back, he discovers a circle of barren ground surrounding a grave with dead flowers resting atop it. Dean confirms the grave belongs to Angela Mason, a student at the local college who died three days ago. There's no rational explanation, and Dean suggests it's the sign of supernatural activity. Sam thinks it's just coincidence and finds it unlikely that they just happened to stumble on a hunt. He wonders if Dean has other issues, but Dean argues that they should at least check it out.
The brothers go to see Angela's father, Professor Mason, who works in archaeology. They introduce themselves as friends of Angela and he invites them into his office. While Sam commiserates, Dean notices a book on Ancient Greek. Mason says that he teaches a course and doesn't think anything of it. Dean asks if he can feel Angela's presence, and the professor admits that sometimes he does. Back at the motel, Dean examines John's journal and insists that something is going on. Sam still doesn't believe it and objects to them having bothered Professor Mason. He suggests that Dean is trying to avoid thinking about their dead parents by imagining a hunt. However, he agrees to have Dean check it out if he feels better. Disgusted, Dean goes out to drink on his own.
Matt is at home watching videos of himself and Angela together. As he goes to get a beer, the plants on the table die in a matter of seconds. Matt sits back down and freezes the video on a shot of Angela... and he notices a reflection of her on the screen. He turns around and screams, as blood splatters on the screen.
Dean breaks into Angela's home and looks around. Angela's roommate Lindsey spots him and panics, and he claims that he's Angela's cousin and he came over to get her things. Dean asks her what the real Angela was like, and a sobbing Lindsey insists that her roommate was just great. She talks about Angela's boyfriend, Matt, and says that he cut his own throat. Before he died, he told Lindsey that he saw Angela everywhere. Dean asks if Angela might be angry with him, but Lindsey insists that things were fine between the couple.
After going to Matt's house, Dean returns to the motel and finds Sam watching porn. He tells Sam what he's discovered and that everything is adding up to a supernatural occurrence. Sam admits that he was wrong, and Dean insists that he knows how to do his job. However, he doesn't believe that Angela is an angry spirit. He has stolen Angela's diary, and figures they should talk to Neil. Posing as grief counselors, the brothers visit Neil. He tells them that Matt probably killed Angela out of guilt, because she found him with another girl the night that she died. As they leave, Dean figures that his theory of a vengeful spirit is proving true. Sam wonders if it's over now that Matt is dead, and Dean suggests that they burn the bones. Sam objects, saying the corpse is fresh, but Dean insists. That night, they dig up Angela's grave only to discover that the coffin is empty.
Neil goes down to the basement of his house. Angela is there, wearing a white dress. She turns and looks at him, smiles, and kisses him. After a moment, Neil kisses her back.
The brothers find an inscription on the bottom of the coffin, and Dean recognizes them. The next day, they go to see Professor Mason and show him the inscription, which is made up of Greek symbols. Mason translates them and explains that they're an ancient necromantic ritual to bring corpses back to life. Dean says that there are dead people he'd like to have back, but that resurrected corpses are vicious and violent. Mason has no idea what he's talking about and tries to call the police. Sam points out the living plants in the house and gets Dean out. Outside, Sam warns that Dean is out of control. Dean finally composes himself and apologizes, but says they need to focus on finding the zombie Angela and putting her down.
At Neil's house, Angela asks if something is bothering him. He asks her about Matt, but she says they've wasted too much time on her ex and invites Neil to sit down. He does, and asks her if she went out to see Matt. Angela insists that she's been there the entire time, and asks how he could believe she'd do something like that. When Neil says that she seems different, Angela admits that she is, and she has realized he's the only one who ever loved her.
At the hotel, the brothers realize that there's no common method of killing zombies. Silver seems to be the common denominator. Dean goes over Angela's diary and finds references to how understanding Neil is, and figures he's the next likely suspect. They go to Neil's house and find dead plants scattered throughout the house. They search the basement and realize Neil has been keeping Angela there, but Angela herself is gone. Dean finds a loose grate and figures that she's escaped. He comments that Lindsey took Matt's death hard.
Lindsey is packing away her belongings when she hears a knock at the door. She opens it only to discover Angela behind her. Lindsey runs into the house and Angela grabs a pair of scissors and says that she cheated with Matt. Lindsey falls to the ground but manages to kick Angela's knee, snapping it. Angela falls to the floor and lands on the scissors. Lindsey rolls her over, but Angela opens her eyes and grabs her hair, and then pulls the scissors out of her chest. As she prepares to stab Lindsey, Dean and Sam arrive and shoot her. Angela runs out the patio door and into the night.
As the brothers drive to Neil's place, they realize that silver didn't have enough of an effect. Sam checks the lore, which talks about nailing a zombie into its own grave. Now they have to figure out how to get Angela back to the cemetery. The brothers go to Neil's office and accuse him of resurrecting Angela and tell him what she's done, and Dean demands to know where she is. Neil claims that Angela is at her house, but Dean notices the dead plants in the office. Noting a nearby closet door, Dean loudly says that they'll be going to Angela's grave to perform a ritual to reverse Neil's ritual. He tells Neil to come with them, but Neil refuses. Dean whispers to him to get out as soon as he can, and be careful not to make Angela mad. Once they leave, Neil goes to the closet and asks why she didn't stay in the house. She says she needs his help, and he notices the bullet and scissor wounds. Angela asks him to come to the cemetery and help her kill the Winchesters. Once they're dead, Angela tells him that they can start new lives together. Neil agrees and goes to get the car while she waits there. He tries to unlock the door and drops the keys, and when he stands up, he finds Angela waiting him. She accuses him of betraying her and snaps his neck.
At the cemetery, Dean and Sam set up a fake ritual. They hear Angela approaching, draw their guns, and move out into the cemetery to find her. Angela comes up behind Sam, who spins and aims. She insists that she was brought back against her will, and she's still the same person. He shoots her in the forehead, but she charges toward him. He runs toward her grave and Angela finally manages to tackle him. However, Dean arrives and shoots her repeatedly, the impacts knocking her into her open grave. Dean jumps in and impales her with a silver spike, destroying her once and for all.
Come sunrise, the brothers finish reburying Angela. As they walk away, Sam admits that Dean's plan was a good one. Dean glances at their mother's grave and Sam asks if they want to stay, but Dean says he doesn't. They drive down the highway, but Dean pulls over and gets out. Sam asks what's wrong, and his brother apologizes. He explains that it's his fault that John is dead, and that he must have got a full recovery because of some deal that John made with the Yellow-Eyed Demon. Dean says that he's back from the dead, and he shouldn't be. Crying, he asks Sam what he could possibly say to make that all right, but Sam doesn't have an answer.
