Roadkill - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
David McNamara and his wife Molly are on a country highway and thoroughly lost. She complains that they're stuck in their car on their anniversary and he flirt with her, and they spot a man on the road ahead of them. Molly jerks the car off the road, they go down the hill, and crash to a stop. When Molly wakes up, David's car door is open but there's no sign of him. She walks through the woods trying to find him and spots a hunting cabin with a lit candle in the window. She knocks on the door and gets no answer, goes inside, and finds a blood-covered table and knives. The man from the road is standing nearby, and Molly apologizes for the accident. He turns around, his eyes black and his mouth oozing blood.

Molly runs out into the woods and finds her way to the highway. She waves down a passing car that stops just before running her over. It's Sam and Dean, and they have her explain what happened. They want to take her back into car, but Sam insists that they get her into town to safety and then come back. Molly refuses to leave without David and asks them to take her back to her car. She leads them to the site but there's no sign of the car. As she goes down the incline to look, Sam tells Dean that they have to hurry before "Greeley," returns. They convince Molly to go into town with them and report to the police. As they drive, Molly talks about how she and David were arguing right before the crash. Sam assures her that they'll figure out what happened to David. The radio comes on by itself, to the same song that was playing when Molly crashed. The channel then changes and a man's voice comes on, saying that "She's mine." The man from Molly's accident, Greeley, appears on the road ahead of them, and Dean speeds up and runs through him. The Impala's engine shuts down and they realize that Greeley won't let them leave.

The brothers get out of the Impala and load up with weapons, and finally tell her that they're hunting for a ghost. Molly thinks that they're nuts, but Sam explains that Greeley died 15 years ago on the stretch of road and appears every year on the anniversary of her death. She still doesn't believe them, but Dean notes that they were trying to get her out and Greeley stopped them. Molly realizes that they're serious, and Sam explains that Greeley finds someone to punish every year. When she realizes she doesn't have a choice, she leads them to Greeley's cabin and they explain that they need to find the grave and salt the bones. He could be buried anywhere on the thousand acres of ground. Dean warns that they have to wrap it up by sunrise or lose their change for another year. The trio start exploring the woods to find Greeley's house, and Molly goes with Sam. She hears David whispering for help and goes off on her own, and Greeley grabs her. Dean arrives and shoots him with rock salt, temporarily dissipating him. As Sam arrives, Dean finds a trail through the woods.

The trio finds Greeley's abandoned house and go inside. Sam and Molly go upstairs and find papers and scrapbooks. Molly finds photos of Greeley and his wife Marion, and a love letter that he wrote to her. Sam explains that good people become ghosts when they become obsessed and refuse to let go of what they had. Dean arrives and says that he hates them, plain and simple, and reports that he found nothing downstairs. He does find a hidden door that's locked from the inside. Kicking it open, they find Marion's corpse, hung by its neck from the rafters. Sam insists that they cut down the body and bury it. Outside, Molly asks what happens when they destroy the ghosts, Sam and Dean admit they don't know where the ghosts go after they're released, and Molly insists that she has to find David.

Back in the house, the brothers and Molly wait. Sam privately tells Dean that they should tell Molly about her husband, but Dean insists that they have to stick to the plan, get her out, and tell her later. Molly overhears them and demands answers, and Dean stops Sam from telling her. She insists that they don't care about her or David. A radio starts up playing the same song, and Dean goes to investigate. He finds a radio in the kitchen, playing despite the fact it's unplugged. The door window frosts up and the words "She's mine" appear in the ice.

In the living room, Sam starts to check on Dean. Greeley smashes through the window, grabs Molly and takes her into the woods. The Winchesters go after him but lose him in the woods. They return to the house and check the scrapbooks, and Sam spots a tree in one of the photos. He explains to Dean that planting trees as a grave marker is an old country custom and runs into the woods.

Greeley's sprit takes Molly to the hunting cabin. She begs him to let her go, saying she understands about Marion, but he says all he has left is hurting others, and he's never going to let Molly go. Molly screams as Greeley cuts her.

Sam and Dean approach the cabin and see Greely and Molly inside. Dean goes to get Molly while Sam starts digging at the tree marking Greeley's grave. Dean dissipates Greeley temporarily, but the ghost reforms and telekinetically slams him into a wall. He grabs a hunting knife and prepares to kill Dean, but Sam salts and burns the bones just in time and the ghost vanishes.

Sam and Dean take Molly to the Impala, but she refuses to leave until they tell her what happened to David. She figures that Greeley killed him, but Sam says that David is alive and well. They take her to David's house and she runs to the window. Inside, a much older David is making coffee, and another woman comes up to him and kisses him. Molly asks the brothers what is going on, and they explain that the woman is David's wife. Fifteen years ago, she and David hit Greeley, killing him... in 1972. They tell her that it's 2007, and she and Greeley have both been haunting the stretch of highway every year on the anniversary of their deaths. Each year, Greeley would chase Molly onto the highway, causing accidents. Molly's bones were cremated, and the brothers went to the highway. They kept the truth from her so she wouldn't leave. Molly says she doesn't remember it, and Sam notes that spirits only believe what they want. Greeley wouldn't let her leave the highway because she's the one who killed him.

Molly realizes that the brothers needed her as bait, and Sam insists that they brought her there so she could move on. When she says that she needs to talk to David to tell him everything, Sam says that he already knows that she loves him, and Dean warns that she'll freak David out if she goes in. It's time for Molly to finish her business and say goodbye, and Sam tells her that she just needs to let go. As the sun rises, Molly steps forward, glows with light, and disappears. Dean says she wasn't bad for a ghost, and wonders if she went to a better place. Sam points out that having hope is the point, and they head out.
