A Very Supernatural Christmas - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
One year ago in Seattle, a grandfather arrives to visit his family, including his grandson eager for Christmas the next day. That night, the grandfather dresses up as Santa and then rings sleigh bells. However, he hears a thump on the roof and sees soot drift down the chimney. He looks up to see what’s inside and something grabs him and yanks him up the chimney. The grandson comes down and looks in horror as a bloody boot falls down the chimney.

It’s now three days before Christmas in Ypsilanti, MI. Sam and Dean, impersonating FBI agents, talk to Mrs. Walsh, who reveals her husband disappeared out of their house while decorating their Christmas tree. Outside, Sam tells his brother that he found a bloody tough in the chimney and they figure the killer pulled him up. At the hotel, Sam checks the news stories and learns that Walsh is the second man to have disappeared in similar fashion. According to some legends, Santa has an evil brother that punishes the wicked, but Dean points out there is no Santa Claus. Sam agrees but reminds Dean that he’s the one who told Sam about Santa Claus in the first place.

Sam learns that both men visited a rundown Santa’s Village in the last week. The Winchesters go there and don’t find anything except shoddy Christmas cheer. Dean is eager to get a Christmas tree but Sam notes how lousy their Christmases were as children.

In the past…

In Broken Bow, Nebraska, Young Dean and Sam are stranded in a hotel room while their father John is out hunting monsters. Sam tries to wrap a package for their father and asks Dean where their parents are. Dean gets mad at him.

In the present…

Sam thinks they should trail the Santa Village Santa, who limps and smells like candy, just like in the legends of Anti Santa. As they drive after him, Dean wants to know why Sam is so down on Christmas and Sam tells him to celebrate it on his own. They follow the Santa to a trailer and hear a woman’s scream inside. However, when they burst in they discover the man is watching porn. Pretending to be carolers to account for their presence, they quickly get away.

That night, a boy hears something on the roof and goes downstairs. He stands stunned as a creature emerges from the chimney and goes upstairs. The boy watches as the monster goes upstairs, garbs the boy’s father, and hauls him up the chimney, pausing only to take a Christmas cookie.

The next day, Sam and Dean investigate the new disappearance and notice a wreath on the front door that’s identical to one at the Walsh home. They call Bobby and learn that the wreaths are made of meadowsweet, which was used to attract pagan gods to find a human victim. They figure they’re looking for the God of the Winter Solstice, which demands human sacrifices in return for mild winter weather. They go to the crafts store where the families got the wreaths and learn that Madge Carrigan, a local woman, donated the wreaths to the store.

Back at the motel, Dean finally explains that since it’s his last year on Earth, he wants to have an actual Christmas celebration with Sam. Sam confesses that he can’t get into the Christmas spirit knowing that Dean is soon going to die.

In the past…

At the hotel, Young Sam finds one of John’s gun and Dean tries to explain what their father does for a living. He explains that there’s no Santa but there are monsters, and Sam realizes that a monster killed their mother. He worries that a monster will kill John as well and Dean doesn’t have anything to say.

In the present…

Dean and Sam go to Madge’s house and meet her and her husband Edward. They try to get a wreath but Madge says she’s given them all away. The couple seems innocent, but when the guys check the records back at their motel, they learn that the Carrigans lived in Seattle a year ago when a similar series of murders occurred. Research also shows that the way to kill the God of the Winter Solstice is to use spears made of evergreen branches. They go back to the Carrigan house and find gnawed human bones in the basement. The Winchesters also find the last victim, still alive. However, the Carrigans manage to ambush them.

When the guys wake up, the Carrigans explains that they are actually pagan gods who blended into the suburban lifestyle once their religion died out and Christianity became popular. Now they only make a sacrifices once a year. They prepare to sacrifice the brothers and start with Sam’s fingernail, but are interrupted when a neighbor comes by to wish them holiday greetings. They go to answer the door and Sam and Dean manage to break free. They bar the door leading out of the kitchen, temporarily trapping the Carrigans, and then make more evergreen spears out of the couple’s Christmas tree. When the couple bursts out, the Winchesters take them out with the spears.

In the past…

On Christmas morning, Young Dean wakes up Sam and shows him the tree he’s managed to put together out of spare parts. He tries to claim Santa delivered the new presents but finally admits to Sam that he stole them. Sam finally gets out of his funk and gives Dean the present he intended for John: an amulet.

In the past…

Dean comes back to the motel holding a package he bought for himself and discovers that Sam has decorated the place. They drink spiked eggnog and exchange presents. Dean gives Sam the package he bught, which has porn and shaving cream. Sam gives Dean some motor oil and a candy bar. Sam starts to say something emotional and deep… and then decides to watch football on TV with Dean.
