Malleus Maleficarum - Recap

The Duttons, Paul and Janet, return home from a party and Janet goes into the bathroom to prepare for bed. Somewhere else, a woman chants over mystic items then takes out a toothbrush and drips some of her own blood on it. In her bathroom, Janet is brushing her teeth when one of them comes loose, and then another, and another. The bathroom door slams shut in her husband's face and Janet collapses to the floor, spitting out teeth. The door finally opens and Paul rushes in to find Janet, dead.

Sam and Dean get word of Janet's death and check it out while impersonating CDC agents. While Dean talks to Paul, Sam checks out the bathroom and finds a hex bag hidden under the sink. They figure it had to be someone Janet knew and had a motive, and start checking around the neighborhood.

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Amanda arrives home acting nervous, and her friend Elizabeth asks why she wasn't at the book club meeting the other night. Amanda gives an excuse and then goes inside, where she takes a rotting chicken out of the oven. She then takes Paul's stolen watch and puts it on the chicken. Paul has gone out to get some fast food and is eating in his car. As Amanda performs the ritual, maggots appear in the hamburger and Paul takes a bite of them. He starts choking but Dean and Sam have been watching him and they quickly find the hex bag hidden in the car and destroy it. They demand to know who wants to kill both Paul and Janet and the husband admits he had an affair with Amanda.

At her house, the chicken has exploded in flames and as Amanda looks on, large gashes appear on her wrists. She falls onto her end table, bleeding to death. Dean and Sam arrive to find her dead and they assume that she killed herself. However, when they discover a hidden hex bag they figure yet another witch targeted Amanda for death.

Elizabeth and her friends Renee and Tammy meet for their book club and discuss Amanda's death. Elizabeth thinks they should stop the club but the other two disagree, with Renee saying they've gained so much. Then the three women begin a magical ritual.

Dean and Sam check out the neighborhood and talk to Elizabeth, realizing she's growing mystic herbs in her garden out-of-season. The brothers start to get to her but Renee and Tammy intervene and get Elizabeth away before she can incriminate them. Dean and Sam do some research and figure out that the women have benefited from good luck in the last few months and Sam insists they're going to have to kill the women. Dean is shocked at first but then agrees. However, as they're back the car stops and Ruby appears in front of them. She tells them to get out of town as a powerful demon is backing the women, a demon too powerful for them. Dean doesn't believe her and draws the Colt, but Sam stops him long enough for Ruby to disappear.

The guys head back to their hotel room to discuss Ruby, and Dean wonders why Sam's getting so violent. Sam explains that he's going to have to be tough since Dean will be gone in a year. However, Dean suddenly grabs at his stomach and collapses to the ground, vomiting blood. Sam can't find the hex bag so he goes after the three women. They all say they don't know what's going on but Sam prepares to kill them.

Back at the hotel room, Ruby goes into the room and forces Dean to drink a potion, curing him. Dean isn't thrilled with owing her his life.

One of the women, Tammy, admits that she's the demon and stops the bullet from the Colt when Sam shoots her. She slams Dean against the wall and then kills Renee when she tries to argue with her. "Tammy" reveals that she's a demon who killed the real housewife and took her body, then gave the other women their powers in return for their unwitting bargain for power. The demon reveals that her kind are mobilizing behind a new leader who wants Sam and Dean out of the way. Dean bursts in but Tammy instantly immobilized him, and then Ruby arrives. She just wants to talk and reveals that she apprenticed with the Tammy demon. However, it's a ruse to get close enough to kill the demon with her mystic knife. However, the Tammy demon realizes what she's up to and the two fight it out until Ruby is defeated. The demon boasts that Ruby was also a human witch who inadvertently sold her soul and ended up condemned to Hell and transformed into a demon. As Tammy prepares to kill Ruby, the repentant Elizabeth casts a spell that causes the demon to cough up hairpins. She stops Elizabeth's heart but she's distracted long enough for Dean to grab Ruby's knife and kill the demon for good. Ruby tells them to go while they can, her eyes glistening black.

Later at their hotel, Dean goes outside and finds Ruby waiting for him. She explains that she's not the only demon who was once human: all humans consigned to Hell eventually are overcome by their sins and become demons, and so will Dean. She's managed to resist it, and wants to stop her fellow demons from destroying the humanity she half-remembers.
