In Monument, Colorado, Dean and Sam break into Bela’s hotel room looking for the Colt, only to find that she’s gone and taken the gun with them. Bela calls to tell them she’s already ahead of them but denies she’s going to sell it. When Dean threatens to come after her, she says she’s already taken precautions… and the Monument police bust in and take the brothers prisoner. Special Agent Victor Henricksen comes in and informs them they’re in serious trouble.
At the Monument jail, Henricksen kicks the one prisoner out and tells Sheriff Melvin Dodd that he’s now under Henricksen’s authority. The special agent then calls his superior, Deputy Director Steven Groves, who plans to fly out in a helicopter and take custody of the brothers personally and put them away once and for all. Henricksen then confronts the brothers, warning that their time is up and that all the brainwashing their father did that led to them (seemingly) killing people is finished.
Groves arrives and visits the brothers… then pulls out a gun and shoots Dean in the shoulder. Sam grabs Groves’ arm and holds him long enough to perform an exorcism ritual, evicting the demon from Groves’ body. Groves collapses, dead, and Henricksen and the police come in. Sam surrenders the gun and tries to convince them that Groves has been dead for months, and there’s no wounds on Groves’ corpse. Henricksen’s partner Reidy goes out to check on the helicopter but finds the pilots and other Monument officers dead, just before the demons finish him off as well and blow up the helicopter.
Henricksen tries to reassure the clerk, Nancy, and demands to know who the Winchester’s friends are. He’s understandably skeptical of their claim that demons are laying siege to the building. Nancy comes in and they try to convince her to get them a towel for Dean’s wound. When she gets close enough, Sam grabs her and yanks off her rosary, then lets her go. The sheriff orders Henricksen to take the brothers to safety but the special agent shoots and kills him. Sam grabs Henricksen and shoves his head into the toilet… where he’s blessed the water with the rosary. Sam performs the exorcism and the demon is evicted from Henricksen, who has to admit something is going on.
With no other choice, Henricksen and the last deputy, Amici, let Sam and Dean set up demon traps and salt to seal the building. Dean goes to the Impala to get some amulets but a black demon flows through the town and Dean barely gets back inside before it arrives. The seals keep it out and Dean hands out the amulets that will keep Henricksen, Nancy, and Amici from being possessed. The brothers have taken the precaution of getting tattoos with the anti-possession mark. The Monument townspeople approach the building, possessed by the demons, and surround the facility.
Amici goes to a window to check on them, inadvertently breaking the salt seal. Henricksen talks to Dean and admits that his job is boring and he’s screwed up by opposing the people he should have been helping. When Dean vows to fight, Henricksen admits they’re both alike, with nothing else to occupy their lives with… except Dean has Sam.
Ruby bursts through the window with the broken seal, explaining that she’s used her knife to fight her way past the demons. She warns them that there’s a new player, Lilith, who plans to dispose of Sam as her only competition. When she finds out they’ve lost the Colt, she’s less then thrilled and tells them she has a spell that can drive out all of the demons. However, she’ll have to sacrifice herself to do it… and take the heart of a virgin. Nancy admits she’s a virgin but Dean refuses to sacrifice an innocent, even though Nancy agrees. Sam sides with Ruby until Dean convinces him that’s not what they do. A disgusted Ruby leaves the building, and the demons let her go rather then lose more of their number.
Dean comes up with a new plan: let the demons in and kill them. They break the seals and Nancy and Amici go up to the roof while Sam, Dean, and Henricksen take on the demons. They’re overwhelmed and the brothers are telekinetically held up against the walls. However, Henricksen gets to the sound system and plays a tape over the loudspeakers: a tape of Sam performing the exorcism ritual. Nancy and Amici seal up the building from the outside and the demons are unable to escape before they’re driven out of their host bodies.
Afterward, Henricksen agrees to protect the brothers by claiming they died in the helicopter explosion and their bodies burned beyond recognition. The Winchesters head out but a little later a young girl comes into the station. She asks for Sam and Dean and reveals that she’s a demon, and uses her powers…
The next day, Ruby catches up to Sam and Dean at their hotel and has them watch the newscast stating that the station blew up in an explosion. She warns that Lilith is responsible and gives them mojo bags to prevent her from detecting them. She tells them that refusing to save Nancy just caused more destruction and from now on it’s war… and she’s in command.
