In Bedford, Iowa, Adam Benson returns home as his wife Vicki is tenderizing meat for supper. When she asks about his boss keeping him late, he snaps at her but hastily apologizes. However, when she tells him she accepted an invitation to a friend’s birthday party, he snaps at her again. When she wonders why he’s so irritable, he picks up the meat tenderizer and beats her to death with it.
Dean wakes up at the brothers’ current hotel to hear Sam in the next room on the phone with someone. he fake being asleep as Sam hangs up then comes into wake him up and tell him about three murders in Bedford where loving husbands have killed their wives. They travel to Bedford and impersonate lawyers to talk to Adam. He says he has no idea why he killed Vicki but when Dean confronts him with a $9,000 credit card bill to a strip cub, Adam admits that he met a stripper named Jasmine and he fell in love with her. He explains that Jasmine asked him to kill Vicki so they could be together always, but admits that he has no idea what Jasmine’s real name is or where she lives. Finally Adam admits that it doesn’t matter: now that he killed Vicki he doesn’t think he deserves to live.
Sam goes to see Dr. Cara Roberts, Bedford’s medical examiner. Claiming to be an FBI agent, he asks her for her workups on the three killers and their victims. As she flirts with him, Cara explains that she found high levels of oxytocin in the bloodstreams of the men but has no way to explain it. As Sam leaves with his brother, Dean explains that the other two men also had stripper girlfriends. Each stripper was different in appearance, but each one was what the men claimed was “perfect.” All the strippers worked at the same club, and the brothers talk to the owner. However, he has no idea who the women were and no paperwork to trace them. Sam checks with Bobby, who has concluded that the killer is a siren, a creature that lures men to their deaths by using its venom to appear to them as the perfect person and convincing them to kill.
In a booth, Lenny is waiting for his perfect stripper, Belle. They go to Lenny’s place and he checks on his mother. After making love on the couch, Belle asks Lenny to kill his mother so that they can always be together. After a momentary hesitation, Lenny takes a poker and beats his mother to death.
The next day, Dean is doing research alone while Sam is out. He notices that Sam has left his phone behind and dials the last number. He hears Ruby’s voice and quickly hangs up. Sam arrives and brings him up to speed on Lenny, and figure that Lenny’s mother was the person he cared about more than anything. Bobby calls to let them know that he’s determined that a siren can be with a bronze dagger dipped in the blood of one of its victims. However, the imprisoned men are no longer under its spell so they need to find a fresh victim… or a blood sample. They go to see Cara to ask her for one of her blood samples. A FBI agent, Nick Monroe, arrives and demands to see the brothers’ credentials. They bluff him then give him a fake FBI card with Bobby’s number: he’s ready to pretend to be a FBI director as a contingency. Once Nick is convinced, he tells them that he’s figured out all the killers were connected to strippers at the same club. Sam has Dean take Nick with him to the club while he tries to get the blood sample from Cara. Dean reluctantly agrees and discovers that Nick likes old cars, strippers, booze, and hard rock. At the club, nick reveals that he found something at the scene of each murder: purple hyacinth flowers.
Sam talks to Cara, who discovers that her blood sample has disappeared. She starts to flirt with Dean then talks about how her ex-husband disappointed her. She finally seduces him and they end up together in her office… with a vase holding hyacinth flowers.
Later, Sam returns to his hotel room and Dean calls him from the road to tell him what Nick found. Hyacinths are native to the Mediterranean, where legends of the siren began. Dean soon realizes that his brother had sex with Cara and figures Sam is now under the siren’s influence. He says he’s going to handle the investigation on his own, then calls Bobby to tell him Sam may be compromised. Finally, he calls Nick and asks for help. They meet outside the club as Cara goes inside. Dean hands Nick a flask while they keep watch, and Nick takes a drink and passes it back. Nick is skeptical of Dean’s theory that the real killer is somehow using venom on its victims. However, Nick then points out that the siren might use saliva, and points out that Dean should have wiped off the flask before taking a new drink. Dean goes into a trance and “Nick” says that he can’t trust Sam. He easily convinces Dean that once Sam is gone, that he can be Dean’s perfect brother.
After leaving for a while, Sam returns to the hotel room to find Nick waiting for him. Sam realizes who “Nick” really is but Dean grabs him by behind and threatens him with a knife. Nick boasts that he’s giving Dean what he always wanted, and that the siren wants someone to truly love. He spits venom into Sam’s mouth and then tells the two brothers to fight it out and the winner gets Nick. Dean taunts Sam, saying that he’s a different person and is keeping secrets like his alliance with Ruby. Sam tells Dean that they’ve been hunting Lilith and kept Dean out of it because he’s too weak, and that Dean knows Sam is the better hunter. The brothers fight, slamming out into the hallway, and Dean gets the upper hand. He grabs an axe and Nick urges him to finish Sam off. However, Bobby arrives and stabs Dean in the shoulder with a bronze knife. As the siren flees, Bobby throws the knife into its back, killing it with the blood of its victim.
The next day, Dean and Sam thank Bobby, who points out they should have checked out Nick’s background the way he did. He wonders if they’re going to be okay. After he leaves, Dean wonders if Sam is going to check back with Cara, but Sam says there’s no point. They both apologize for what they said, Dean noting it was due to the siren’s spell, and they both claim that they’re okay.
