The New Batman Adventures

The New Batman Adventures

The New Batman Adventures comes from the creators of Batman and Superman. This series was created because Fox had not lived up to the contract that they had given Batman, so the WB decided to give the show another chance. Bruce Timm then went back and decided to re-design all of the characters from Batman and ended up revamping the series all-together.

The re-designs first appeared in the three-part Superman episode "World's Finest" where Batman and Superman teamed up to stop the Joker and Lex Luthor. That was the first of many crossovers between the two shows. The New Batman Adventures then began to air alongside Superman in the hour long block of animation known as The New Batman/Superman Adventures. Many fans of Batman loved the series, but many others did not and they found various things wrong with this spin-off.

The setting of the series was two years after the last episode of Batman, and to give it the whole time-jump feeling, many things in Gotham had changed. In the two years, Dick Grayson had retired from being Robin, and he traveled the world (like Batman) and returned to Gotham as Nightwing. Barbara Gordon became a full member of Batman's team as she became his main partner. Then, a new Robin, Tim Drake came into the gang and they became the knights of Gotham if you will... The series also featured many of the rouges gallery members from the previous series (e.g. Joker, Bane, and Riddler) as well as brought some new ones in (e.g. Firefly, Farmer Brown.) The series had proven to be very good in quality and is very well known through out the DCAU.

However, the series did not last very long as it was canceled in 1999 to pave way for the new Batman cartoon coming out... Batman Beyond! This series crossed over with that series in the Batman Beyond movie Return of the Joker which took place years after this series and the eventual Justice League series.

While the series was not as good as its original incarnation, The New Batman Adventures has made it's mark in the DCAU, and fans have missed this series since its cancellation.
