Karai, played by Karen Neil
Adopted as a child by Ch'rell in his guise of Oroku Saki, Karai trained under his stern tutoring and vigilance, eventually ascending to the leadership of The Foot in Japan. When The Shredder was mortally wounded by the Turtles and forced into hiding to recover, Karai first made her prescience known, arriving in New York to assist her father's arch enemies in stopping the spread of civil war between the Foot factions and the cities major crime lords for control.
For all of his evil intentions, Ch'rell deeply loved Karai and she remained his sole confidant, only sh knew of his true Utrom nature in his evil circle of followers. Saki unfortunately also demanded her loyalty and knew that she saw the Turtles, the pupils of Hamato Yoshi's legacy, Splinter, as allies and Friends. Many times she was tempted to finish them at the behest of her guardian, but she refused.
The teasing and the indecision finally ended with Karai unable to slay Leonardo, a Turtle she had come to care for, and the Turtles ultimately overcame Ch'rell, and brought him to justice, exiling him to the Ice Asteroid of Mor-Tal. Embittered, Karai took his place as The Shredder and launched a vengeful campaign of terror against the Turtles, until she was humbled and defeated in battle by Leonardo.
Karai remained the Turtles hateful nemesis, but her control was gradually slipping on The Foot Mystics that served Ch'rell. Knowing full well now that he was a Utrom and not their true master, the spirits were soon freed from their control thanks to the Turtles and Agent Bishop. They would return in force, bringing with them the reincarnated Tengu Shredder, the first to hold the mantle.
Karai, near defeat , was rescued by the Turtles, her former enemies, and she spent many days recovering from her humiliating dethroning. Realizing she was linked to the mantle, she used a latent mental connection to assist the Turtles in fighting the Tengu Shredder, helping them to defeat him once and for all. When the battle was over, Karai departed the battlefield, holding the hand of Doctor Chaplin, whom she had fallen in love with over the course of her reign over The Foot, finally at peace with not just the Turtles, but herself. |
