Desert Cantos - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Sarah, John, Derek and Cameron attend a memorial for the 32 workers that died in the explosion at the heat and air plant where Sarah was shot. They are there to find someone who knew what was really going on there. On the drive, they notice dead cattle in the fields along the way.

Each of the 32 workers is represented with a photograph. Sarah stops and ponders the photograph of the man who shot her, Ed Winston, and who she eventually killed in a life or death struggle. Another woman joins her and startles Sarah when she introduces herself as Diana Winston, the wife.

John makes friends with Zoe, a girl whose father was killed at the plant. While they talk, an obviously jealous boy named Henry approaches Zoe, but she rebuffs him.

Service

Sarah sits with Diana at the service and Diana reveals her husband worked security seven days a week, which always puzzled her. Diana gets upset during the service and speaks out against the parent company that owned the business, asking if anyone had ever seen a representative from them, ever.

A man called Walsh is also attending. During the service he receives a phone call from Catherine Weaver. He is in her employ and is looking for someone who survived the explosion, an explosion she created. As he sits during the service, he draws Derek's attention since he seems out of place.

At Zeira Corp., Ellison learns it is the anniversary of the death of Catherine Weaver's husband. Mr. Murch tells him both of the Weavers had a good sense of humor, in stark contrast to Catherine's current demeanor.

After her outburst, Diana shows Sarah a key ring with a key to a storage locker that she was ignorant of. She wanted to check it out but was afraid. She gives the key to Sarah who decides to check it out. She finds blankets covered in blood among other things.

Processional

Derek is driving his truck in the funeral procession when he spots Walsh next to his car, which has a flat tire. Derek gives him a lift and Walsh tells him he is investigating the explosion for OSHA. Derek probes for information to no avail.

Sarah rides with Diana. Sarah tells her the storage locker was empty. Diana plays a voice mail from her husband that was the last time she heard from him. The recording is of the struggle Sarah had with the man and the gunshots that killed him. Diana is distraught and Sarah is helpless to answer her questions.

John and Cameron ride along with Zoe and Henry. Zoe talks about a friend whose mother worked at the plant and disappeared one day after his mother violated a confidentiality agreement. Cameron makes an observation that Zoe doesn't love Henry like he loves her and Henry freaks, stopping his car in the middle of the funeral procession and demanding John and Cameron leave. John gets out and replaces Henry as the driver and Zoe directs him to a location where several cows are lying dead. They all wonder how they died as there is no obvious cause of death.

Burial

At the cemetery, the mood is somber. Zoe tells John that everyone got a large insurance settlement. She thinks the plant was some secret Government project.

Sarah and Derek talk and she notices Walsh. He recommends they follow him as he is looking for something. Sarah is adamant that Skynet is there somewhere, but no one has mentioned the drone she saw.

John speaks to Zoe after the funeral and catches her in a lie about her father. Zoe leaves in a huff and Cameron notices she hasn't cried for her dead father.

Sarah follows Walsh and sees him break into a house. Sarah waits for Walsh to emerge from the house and finally decides to follow him.

Ellison speaks with Catherine about the loss of her husband and how she and her daughter Savannah are handling their loss. From Ellison's questions, Catherine realizes she is not playing the part of a grieving widow properly and asks Ellison if they can talk another time. Ellison agrees but is obviously confused by her behavior.

Wake

John, Derek and Cameron are eating at a gathering at the McCarthy home. Cameron notices Zoe and her mother Stella standing next to a picture of the father and comments how neither of them have looked at the photo once. John realizes that is because their father is not dead.

In the house, Sarah notices the front door latch is secured, something that cannot be done when the last person leaves. She finds an entrance that leads to a basement where multiple monitors are watching the town from various points. She finds blood on the floor and follows.

John is inside the McCarthy home rifling through closets and cabinets when Zoe catches him. John confronts her about her father, asking her to let him help and she silently points up to a security camera that is watching them.

Sarah follows extensive underground tunnels that lead to another ladder. She exits the tunnels inside a garage. The garage turns out to belong to the McCarthy family.

Recessional

Sarah takes John, Derek and Cameron back into the tunnels to the security center along with Zoe and Stella. Derek remarks how the setup is identical to the way Skynet does it in the future. Sarah tries to get Stella and Zoe to tell them what was going on at the plant but they confess their ignorance. Cameron finds archived footage that shows Ed Winston and Mr. McCarthy killing Zoe's good friend that disappeared. John finds some boots and says he thinks he knows where the father might be hiding.

Catherine has Savannah brought to her office. She notices Savannah crying and tells her the story that Ellison told her about his father, pretending that it is her own.

John leads them to the site where the cows are and they find Mr. Walsh, dead. In a nearby pool of water, bubbles start rising. Suddenly a Skynet drone burst from the water and hovers above them, then turns and flies away. A semi truck is parked next to the road with the cargo doors open and the drone flies inside and shuts down. Mr. McCarthy closes the doors and drives the truck away.
