Sophie's choice is likened to Jackie's choice between money or Michael. The novel Sophie's Choice was not published till 1979 and the movie version was not released till 1982. As per the timeline in the show (determined by the license plates shown at the beginning), the year is 1978, well before Sophie's Choice was known.
