MGM's Gigi won Best Motion Picture of the year, as well as the Best Director award for Vincente Minnelli at the 30th Annual Academy Awards. Other awards went to David Niven for Best Actor for Separate Tables, Burl Ives for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for The Big Country and Best Actress for Susan Hayward for her role in I Want to Live! All around entertainer Maurice Chevalier received an Honorary Award for his contributions to the world of entertainment over more than half a century.
