Clara Edwards [1960-1968], played by Hope Summers

Clara Edwards is a widow and Aunt Bee's best friend. She's the church organist, plays piano in Opie's rock band, and composes an anthem celebrating the good life in Mayberry. Clara performs the role of Lady Mayberry in the town pageant and wins the pickle contest at the county fair. Clara appeared in all eight seasons and, after TAGS, appeared in its spinoff series Mayberry RFD.

Clara underwent several name changes through the show. In the first season, she was called Bertha Edwards. In the second season she became Clara Johnson and, in the fifth season, Clara Edwards. She is generally referred to as Clara Edwards.
 
 
Ellie Walker [1960-1961], played by Elinor Donahue

Elinore 'Ellie' Walker is the niece of Mayberry pharmacist Fred Walker. She is a pharmacist herself and has taken up residence in Mayberry to assist her uncle. Ellie becomes Andy's steady date. Ellie appeared in twelve episodes during the first season.
 
 
Emmett Clark, played by Paul Hartman

Emmett runs a Fix-It Shop in Mayberry. He is married to Martha and is friends with Andy, Goober, and Howard. Emmett runs for a position on the city council. After his tour of duty on TAGS, Emmett graduated to Mayberry RFD.
 
 
Floyd Lawson, played by Howard McNear

Floyd Lawson is Mayberry's barber. Floyd is inconsistently wed - in some episodes he's married, in other's he's not. His wife's name is Melba and their son is named Norman. Floyd has a sister, a niece named Virginia Lee and a nephew, Deputy Warren Ferguson. His shaggy dog is named Sam. In one episode of Gomer Pyle, USMC, Floyd has a daughter.

Howard McNear had a stroke midway through the series run. After his recovery and return to the show, he was filmed sitting down, either in the barber chair or outside his shop on the sidewalk bench. McNear left the show in the seventh season.
 
 
Gomer 'Gome' Pyle, played by Jim Nabors

Gomer Pyle is an attendant and mechanic at Wally's Filling Station. Gomer's cousin is Goober Pyle. Gomer joins the Marine Corps.

Gomer appeared in the third and fouth seasons. Jim Nabors left the series at the end of the fourth season to star in his own series Gomer Pyle USMC.
 
 
Goober 'Goob' Pyle [1964-1968], played by George Lindsey

Goober is Gomer Pyle's cousin. He replaces Gomer at Wally's filling station when Gomer enters the United States Marine Corps. Goober eventually buys and manages the filling station. Andy, Howard, Floyd, Emmett, and Warren all have accepted Goober into their circle. Goob had two girlfriends during the series run: waitress Flora Malherbe and Lydia Crosswaithe.

Goober appeared in seasons five through eight. Post-TAGS, he saw a tour of duty on Mayberry RFD.
 
 
Helen Crump [1962-1968], played by Aneta Corsaut

Helen hails from Kansas City and moves to Mayberry to accept a teaching job. She is Opie's teacher. Helen is a self sufficient, independent woman. She displays a quick temper on occasion but most often plays the voice of reason for others - especially Andy. Helen and Andy date for several years and marry in the first episode of Mayberry RFD. They return at a later date on Mayberry RFD to christen their son Andrew Samuel Taylor.

Corsaut was hired in the third season for a one-shot guest appearance as Helen Crump. The producers liked her performance and she remained in the series as a semi-regular for the remainder of the series run.
 
 
Howard Sprague, played by Jack Dodson

Howard Sprague is Mayberry's County Clerk. He lives with his mother. In the last season, Howard's mother remarries and moves, leaving Howard to remodel the house as a swinging bachelor's pad. Howard becomes engaged to Millie Hutchins, a bakery worker. Howard is friends with Andy, Goober, Emmett, and Sam Jones. He enjoys bowling and fishing.

Howard appeared in seasons six through eight.
 
 
Otis Campbell, played by Hal Smith

Otis Campbell is Mayberry's town drunk. He is the descendant of a Revolutionary War hero and a plaque is conferred upon him recognizing his descent. Otis appeared in seasons one through seven.
 
 
Sam Jones [1968], played by Ken Berry

Sam Jones is a farmer and printer. He's a widower with a young son named Mike. Sam runs for city council and wins. Sam is friends with Andy, Goober, Emmett, and Howard. Aunt Bee becomes Sam's housekeeper in Mayberry RFD. Sam appears in the last season.
 
 
Thelma Lou 'Thel' [1960-1964], played by Betty Lynn

Thelma Lou is Barney's steady girlfriend. Her last name is never disclosed. She lives alone and has two cousins who appear on the show: Karen Moore and Mary Grace Gossage. Thelma Lou and Barney frequently double date with Andy and Helen. After Barney leaves Mayberry for a new job, Thelma Lou marries. Thelma Lou appeared in seasons one through five and made a guest appearance in one color episode.
 
 
Warren Ferguson, played by Jack Burns

Warren Ferguson is Floyd Lawson's nephew. He hails from Boston and graduated fourth in his police class. Warren joins the cast in the sixth season as Andy's deputy and appears in eleven sixth season episodes.
