Barney on the Rebound - Recap

Barney goes overboard welcoming lovely new resident Melissa Stevens to Mayberry and, in doing so, excites Thelma Lou's jealousy. The lovebirds argue and decide to go their own ways. Melissa invites Barney to dinner with her father George and tricks Barney into proposing marriage. The next day, Barney spots a marriage notice in the newspaper and, realizing the gravity of the situation, asks Andy for his help. Andy gets Barney and Thelma Lou back together. Barney immediately breaks off his engagement with Melissa. Mr. Stevens, in retaliation, opens a breach of promise suit. Andy calls the Stevenses and Barney to the courthouse and cleverly suggests Melissa marry Barney as a way of avoiding the breach of promise suit. Melissa refuses to participate, calling Barney a squirt. In her fury, she shows herself to be what she is - a con woman hoping to squeeze money out of Barney. Andy orders the Stevenses out of town while Barney and Thelma Lou breathe a sigh of relief.
