The Breakout - Recap

Gotham’s newest villain, Black Mask, is extorting the city using a shock-wave generator that he demonstrated the previous evening. Now Commission Gordon has five minutes to deliver the money. However, Batman arrives and takes out Black Mask, while Robin and Batgirl dispose of the villain’s underlings.

Although batman has disabled Black Mask’s computer, the shock-wave generator is still hidden somewhere and the villain still has the activation codes. Batman goes to search for the device and assigns Robin and Batgirl to escort duty, accompanying Black Mask to police headquarters. Neither of them are too thrilled at being assigned a “grunt” job, and watch over the precinct house while grousing to each other.

Black Mask refuses to tell Gordon where the generator is. Batman gets an apparent lead on its location but it turns out to be an ambush. Black Mask’s underlings take him out and lock him in a cage. Meanwhile, Black Mask’s primary henchman, Number 1, has a fake police van ready and is preparing an assault on the precinct house to rescue their boss. They pump knockout gas into the building, knocking out the police, but Batgirl quickly dons a mask and gets a spare to Robin. They clear out the gas and go after Black Mask, who is making a break for it. They lock him in a cell but realize that his men are there to free him.

Batgirl closes off the security gates while Robin takes on the first wave of attackers. He manages to hold them off but almost gets cut off when the security gates close. He gets back into the inside area just in time, and they try to contact Batman. He’s missing his utility belt and they don’t know where he is, so they prepare to notify the other police stations. However, Number 1 leads an assault through the elevators. Batgirl cuts the car cables, thwarting one group, while Robin fights the others. Number 1 has his men start cutting through the security doors and then drives through them with a van. They take Batgirl and Robin down and then take their utility belts. The shock-wave generator is in the van and Black Mask, now free, prepares to activate it.

Batman manages to get loose by using a hidden remote control to activate a shocking device on his captors. Batgirl manages to get free then free Robin and they head for the roof where Black Mask is leaving by helicopter. He’s already disposed of Number 1 as the price for failure. They climb up the rope ladder after him and fight, but he manages to activate the generator before they defeat him. However, Batman has arrived downstairs at the van and deactivated it. Mildly impressed, Batman congratulates them on saving the city with their “grunt work”… and then has them wash the Batmobile.
