At Bedford University, a group of students in a human sexuality and behavior class, led by Professor Macklin, are assigned to keep a diary of their sexual experiences and encounters. Meanwhile, rumors fly that Sarah, the student body president, had an affair with a professor when Richard, a recovering alcoholic, publishes an article about it in the school newspaper.
As the class talks about sexual responsibility, Lee is thrown off track when he receives startling news from his girlfriend. After Professor Dixon's affair with two students is leaked, the Bedford ethics committee meets to decide his fate. Meanwhile, Owen sleeps with his sister's roommate, resulting in Natalie realizing her true feelings for him.
After secrets from Lee's personal life are exposed in the student newspaper, Professor Macklin makes the weekly theme of the class confidentiality. Meanwhile, Richard, the editor of the newspaper, defends the article, using the First Amendment to back him up. Sara begins dating an athlete, not knowing that he's only using her to get more funding for his team.
Richard starts seeing an older woman, unaware that she's Professor Macklin's ex-wife. Owen and Natalie volunteer at a psychiatric center and after a patient develops a crush on Owen, Natalie begins to think of Owen differently. Meanwhile, in class, the students study sexual manipulation.
The class discusses the difference between sex and love while Owen does his best to plan an impressive date for Natalie. Sarah dumps the athlete that she's been dating when she finds out the truth about why he's with her. Meanwhile, Lee gets sucked into the world of online gambling; and Richard attends the same concert as Professor Macklin and his wife.
With the class topic of the week being "Passion", Zoe convinces herself, and the class, that she isn't passionate about anything. However, her mind is changed when she tries out for the school mascot. Natalie, finding that her passion is the health clinic, fights to keep it open, and Owen, knowing that his passion is Natalie, helps to keep the clinic open as well. But Sarah's opposition to the health clinic and her reasons for wanting to shut it down causes a rift between her and Owen. Meanwhile, Richard uses his family ties to get Katrina a meeting with high-powered city officials.
After Richard becomes depressed that Katrina left him to get back together with Professor Macklin, he goes to Natalie, his ex-girlfriend, for support, making Owen jealous. When Lee falls deeper and deeper into his gambling addiction, he is forced to buy a term paper on-line for one of his classes. Meanwhile, Zoe debates whether or not to lose her virginity, knowing that doing so would make Lee jealous.
The topic of the week is abstinence, but the students have have anything but that on their minds. Lee has a tough time abstaining from both sex and gambling and is forced to go to Richard for a loan to pay back his gambling debt. Zoe is hired as the school's sex columnist. Owen and Natalie re-evaluate their relationship when Natalie refuses to let Owen stay with her for a few days. Owen's response to her decision and the rift it causes between them makes Natalie reconsider getting back together with Richard. Meanwhile, Sarah almost agrees to give her former lover another chance, but changes her mind when she finds out that he's still sleeping with other students.
